Summary

A gentle romance begins innocently enough in the stalls of a London theatre where Catherine is enjoying her ninth and Christopher his thirty-sixth visit to the same play. He is a magnificent young man with flame-coloured hair. She is the sweetest little thing in a hat. There is just one complication: Christopher is 25, while Catherine is just a little bit older. Flattered by the passionate attentions of youth, Catherine, with marriage and motherhood behind her, is at first circumspect, but finally succumbs to her lover's charms.

Brilliantly Observed - simple story that says so much about society of the era.

I love Von Armin and this is an interesting exploration of the meaning, and different interpretations or manifestations of love through mixed age marriages. Five main characters play out the story, a religious one, 2 young, 3 old who represent values, class, morality, issues of female medicine, etc. it is beautifully written and a joy to discover the subtlety of her writing. The plot is uncomplicated but effective, though I felt she slightly lost her way towards the end. Did she stretch it to meet a word count. Memorable for its precise observations of psychosocial matters and underlying feminist message.

Wonderful book

Loved this book and one I would enjoy reading again. It was well written and a very clever but in a way sad story.

Captivating

This story was great as an audible book. I think I’d have got bored if I’d read it. It is beautifully narrated and is a wonderfully reserved tale that is relevant today although society is more accepting.

Delightful

I really enjoyed the story and the reading by Eleanor Bron - I cannot think that any other reader could have made this book so perfect. It was long but I didn’t want it to end - I haven’t listened right through a book in a long time.

Beautiful, funny clever

Interesting to see how some of the accepted behaviours of the past are now problematic but I really enjoyed the story and the narration was great. Humorous and heartfelt.

Enthralling period study

Absolutely fantastic novel that transports the listener back to the suffocating social mores of pre war England.

Despite its historical grounding, it’s surprising how current many of the themes are - the gender hypocrisy and women’s’ perennial fear of ageing for example.

The sense of foreboding builds almost from the start, leaving me gripped and unable to stop listening.

The clipped narration is perfectly paced and brilliant captured the upright restraint and suppressed emotion of the characters. I absolutely loved this and feel sure I will return again and again.

A bittersweet story of love

I very much enjoyed 'Love'. It's a moving story of romantic and familial loves, read excellently by Eleanor Bron.

Infuriating and gripping

A very Edwardian story about infatuation, misunderstanding, predudice, words left unsaid and the folly of youth/age. I must say all the characters are guilty of misunderstanding each other and never saying what they actually mean. This is so infuriating but it gives you a glimpse into the thoughts and the shame of a bygone age. Not sure I'm any the wiser but nevertheless an interesting listen.
