Summary

Singulière affaire dont doit s'occuper Louis Fronsac en mai 1638. En ouvrant le testament d'un riche voiturier sur eau qui vient d'être assassiné, sa fille découvre qu'il a laissé sa fortune à sa belle-mère, contrairement à la coutume de Paris.

Au même moment, Gaston de Tilly, revenu de Hollande où il était cornette dans la compagnie de M. de Turenne, occupe une charge de commissaire des quais au bureau de l'Hôtel de ville de Paris quand M. Fronsac obtient pour lui un office de commissaire examinateur au Grand-Châtelet.

Rapidement, Louis va se retrouver face à des ennemis implacables et puissants, dont certains siègent aussi au Châtelet.
