Summary
When someone says, 'You have to know your history...', this is it. This classic book is the whole unruly story of dance music in one volume. It recreates the dance floors that made history, conjuring their atmosphere with loving detail and bringing you the voices of the DJs and clubbers at their heart—from grime, garage, house, hip hop and disco, to techno, soul, reggae, rock 'n' roll and EDM. Whether musical outlaw, obsessive crate-digger or overpaid superstar, the DJ has been at the spinning centre of nightlife for a century, making parties wilder, pushing clubbers harder and driving music into completely new shapes and styles. In 1999, this was the first book to do justice to the DJ's roller coaster ride. Twenty years later, it's fully refreshed, carefully updated and filled with even more stories, including two brand-new chapters. This edition comes with a new foreword by James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem).

A musical education
It was a musical education.Excellent research and detail throughout the book. I read an earlier edition and enjoy the new material, especially acknowledging the female DJs and an up to date perspective on the current DJs trends and its democracy.

Music is the answer
Like a great DJ set this book takes you on a journey through so many genres and perfectly puts you in the shoes of the people who lived and breathed it.

Essential music history superbly collated
An essential and extremely well researched and written history of dj’ing and music. The new update really brings it up to date in 2024 and the joining of international dots is very well executed and linked.
If you want to know the history of where we are today musically from a dance perspective this is such an important book.
The narrator is very good except for his constant mispronunciation of Balearic - which is totally forgivable in light of the superb content.
I would really like to hear Bill & Frank’s other books converted into Audio format as they are also very good and need to be accessible to the huge audiobook market of listeners.

a great book ruined by awful narration and editing
A great book ruined by incredibly bad editing & lacklustre narration, it's jarring at times. A huge disappointment after listening to the Chris Blackwell book with its excellent narration.

Good historical document but dreadful narration
I read the paperback a decade ago and found it really compelling but this audio version of it not only did not match up, it began to taint my memory of the book altogether and therefore I abandoned two thirds through.
Even after several attempts at going back to it, the narrator was seemingly so affected and annoying (complete with mispronuncithat it just felt incongruous
