Exiliado en Inglaterra desde 1938, Arturo Barea se dedicó plenamente a la literatura y al periodismo y fue "en la paz del country" donde terminó La forja de un rebelde, una trilogía que figura entre las obras maestras de la literatura universal. En la primera parte, La forja (1941) Barea narra su infancia y primera juventud en el Madrid de principios de siglo. Después del gran éxito de este libro, llegó a las librerías inglesas la segunda parte, titulada La ruta (1943), en la que Barea cuenta sus primeros escarceos literarios y, sobre todo, sus experiencias en la guerra de Marruecos. La llama (1946), publicada por la editorial inglesa Faber; Faber, vendió cerca de 6,000 ejemplares en solo seis meses. La razón fue que Barea, en el relato de su vida, había alcanzado, descrito, sufrido y llorado el 18 de julio de 1936 y los años terribles que le siguieron, hasta su exilio en 1938.
