Entre los numerosos objetos de análisis que llamaron la atención de Aristóteles (384-322 a.C.) se contó también el fenómeno literario y, dentro de él, su más notable manifestación en su época: el teatro. En el sucintotratado que recibe el nombre de Poética expone con maestría la estructura formal de la tragedia y la comedia de la antigua Grecia. En él es donde encontramos por primera vez definidos algunos conceptos literarios la trama o argumento de una obra, las distintas partes de una pieza dramática, los efectos que el teatro produce en el espectador o lector, así como términos como el de catarsis o purificación, la peripecia o cambio de fortuna, o el concepto de anagnórisis (reconocimiento), que desde entonces pasaron a ser moneda corriente en todo el desarrollo posterior de las literaturas occidentales.
