Wir hören das Wort “Swing” und verbinden es automatisch mit den Big Bands, die in den dreißiger Jahren die Szene beherrschten. Der Begriff „beherrschen“ stimmt dann, wenn wir unter Szene die Dance Halls und die Ballsäle der großen Städte verstehen und die breite Masse des Publikums, der es um das Tanzen und um die Unterhaltung ging. Daneben etablierte sich aber auch eine andere Szene: in den kleinen Clubs von New York, aber auch in anderen Städten. Dort spielten kleine Gruppen, vor einem Publikum, dem es mehr ums Zuhören ging. Meist waren die Musiker Mitglieder der großen Bands. Dort verdienten sie ihren Lebensunterhalt, wenn sie auch nur sporadisch Gelegenheit hatten, als Solisten ins Rampenlicht zu treten.
