Summary

Two hearts. A second chance. Everything on the line…

Ryan "West" Westlake belongs on the island. It's in his blood and who he is. Nobody can deny that. When Piper Harland walked out of his life years ago, West let her go. He'd never stand in the way of a woman and her dreams. But now that she's back, their past smacks him right in the face. With tempers flared and desires heightened, West just might realize what he lost so long ago.

Piper would do anything for her brother - even if means going back to Stewart Island - the one place she swore she'd never go again. As a member of the elite New Zealand Police Dive Team, Piper is forced to return to her hometown. When she confronts the demons of her past, old feelings of grief and pain come flloding back, as well as lost love. Without drowning, can Piper wade through the pain of her past and find a future with the one who shattered her heart?

Audible version is as good as reading the book!

I originally read this book way back in 2015 but got this Audible version in a free download over Christmas and enjoyed listening to it just as much as I did reading it!
This is the first book of the Due South series and is an amazing start to what I am sure will be a fantastic series.
Piper is summoned back to Oban to help with a family crisis – she heads back with dread knowing she would rather face gang members and drug addicts high on meth than set foot on Oban and face her past. The past of her father’s death on the island, which has left her with PTSD that she does not acknowledge and buries as deep as possible, the past of abandoning her family when tragedy hit and they needed her most and the possibility of facing Ryan ‘West’ Westlake who is not only her past but still holds her heart – a fact she won’t even admit to herself. She is a Police Diver, who hilariously also suffers from seasickness, she uses her sarcasm, quick wit and cutting remarks as a defence to keep everyone at arms length. She is defensive, prickly, insecure but fiercely loyal to those she loves, not hesitating to wade in before she thinks.
West is still convinced he did the right thing by pushing Piper away nine years ago to live out her dreams, he has even managed to convinced himself that this was the best thing for him too as she would have left in the longterm anyway. It is not until Piper returns that he realises he is living a half life.
Look out when they come together as fireworks are guaranteed, there are plenty of sparks when they reconnect and verbally ‘spar’, sizing each other up and both trying to convince themselves that there is nothing between them, these sparks become a raging inferno when they finally give in, with plenty of hot, dirty sex.
Can either of them admit their feelings to themselves and each other before it is too late or are they doomed to make the same mistakes they made nine years earlier and live with their fears rather than the love they could have?
There are plenty of tears and emotion to go with the hot sex, we get to meet some fantastic ‘support’ characters who will get their books later in the series....Ben, Shaye, Kezia, Holly, Erin, Ford and many more. We also get to meet some lovely quirky characters such as Mrs Taylor, Glenna and Bill who as the older generation take great pleasure in interfering and lighten the book with their antics and fun – I am sure we will see more of these as the series continues too.

Too Deep

I loved the narration of Amy Soakes. She brings these characters and story to life. Making this great story a pleasure to listen to

Nine years ago Piper was with her father when he died. She was his diving buddy, her concentration wasn't where it should have been, so she didn't see her father struggling until it was too late.
At 15 years old, she couldn't lift the man, over twice her weight, into the boat, so she had to let him go.
They never had a body to bury, so straight after her father's memorial service, Piper left Oman, New Zealand, for Wellington, to become a dive cop.
The guilt is still so strong and her family I.e her brother has not forgiven her. Piper returns home to help out when her brother falls ill.
She meets again Ryan the man who her mind was on 9 years ago.

Brilliant listen

Full of everything romance

I love second chances. West and Piper both have so much past hurt, that this is a second chance for them both to find love and to heal. Piper has to face her fears to return home. West lost his mentor, when Piper lost her father. He dives to forget, until Piper returns. The chemistry between these two heats up the pages of the book. The drama and suspense that surround them, keep those pages turning. I loved their happy ending, but getting there was half the fun.

Amy Soakes has an easy to listen to voice and keeps a steady pace. Her accent added a real feel to the characters. She brought the characters to life. Ms. Soakes narrated the suspense and drama in the book in such a way, that I was hanging on my seat at times. Overall, I enjoyed the narration of this book.
