Il suo romanzo A fool of Nature - scritto usando lo pseudonimo Judit Hollinshed - vinse un premio di 10.000 dollari offerto dal New York Herald, che poi lo assunse come giornalista investigativo e lo mando in India a scrivere della carestia che stava devastando il paese.
Nel 1913 fu condannato ad un anno di carcere per il suo coinvolgimento in una truffa per vendere azioni di miniere d’oro fasulle.
