Summary

Ever been tempted to try a marathon? Maybe you’ve just started running, perhaps you’re gaining confidence, or are you already well on your way to conquering the iconic distance? Whatever stage you’re at on your journey, join marathon man Vassos Alexander as he shows us why we shouldn’t be afraid of the big 26.2.

Every marathon runner’s journey is different. You might have caught the bug after experiencing that adrenaline rush of completing your first 5k; it might be a desire to finally cross something off your bucket list; or, perhaps it was a bit of an absentminded afterthought while watching TV, crisps in hand, and a niggling voice saying ‘maybe I could do that’–it was for Vassos, at least. However far along you are in your journey, How to Run A Marathon shows us that absolutely anyone can take those first steps to defeating the distance. In fact, you’ll probably end up enjoying it a lot more than you think.

Including inspiring interviews with runners from all walks of life, delightful tales of remarkable marathons all over the world, crucial training and nutrition tips and so much more, Vassos shares all the lessons he’s learnt—from start line to finisher’s medal.

Funny, candid and motivating, this book will not only help you succeed in your marathon quest but empower you to complete the distance any way you want. Whether that’s achieving a particular time or simply finishing in one piece, How to Run a Marathon will guide you through.

Feeding the running bug

As a veteran of nothing more than a couch to 5k this book has inspired me to lace up the running shoes and firmly plant a marathon goal, might take a while but so be it.

Realistic, funny, informative

I've been jogging now for 6 months and have been increasing my distance and speed to try and aim for a marathon one day. This book has helped eased my anxieties about taking part in a marathon and has given me hope that one day I will take part in a Marathon. Vassos is funny and he and his speakers give you insight and perspectives of each person's individual journey. There is great guidance on courses, stretching, fuelling, running and all sorts of other things that can give you the confidence to make it to a marathon yourself one day.

Great book, but not an easy listen

I’ve listened to all of Vassos’ books and enjoyed them, but in the previous ones it was often confusing when he would read the words of contributions as you would lose track of whose words you were listening to. So I appreciate getting voice artists in to read the words of others. But the American accents... crikey. That was a tough listen in places. Not the artists' fault at all, just a really bad decision to get them doing accents which hugely vary in quality. Don't let this stop you getting the book though!

Vassos is a great read

His previous 2 books were superb. Vassos is a very good writer and narrator. I enjoyed this book though the additional material from others felt a little like padding. The female extra was good the male extra not so much. Overall a good informative listen if some parts didn’t seem necessarily important. Still well worth a read as Vassos is one of your own and hugely experienced in running

I loved it!

I loved it to the point that before the end I had booked myself in for the Brighton marathon in April 2023. I'm now slightly nervous, but I can cash the cheque in for all my training on race day, right Vassos?
