Summary
Pulitzer Prize, General Nonfiction, 1998
Guns, Germs and Steel examines the rise of civilization and the issues its development has raised throughout history.
Having done field work in New Guinea for more than 30 years, Jared Diamond presents the geographical and ecological factors that have shaped the modern world. From the viewpoint of an evolutionary biologist, he highlights the broadest movements both literal and conceptual on every continent since the Ice Age, and examines societal advances such as writing, religion, government, and technology. Diamond also dissects racial theories of global history, and the resulting work—Guns, Germs and Steel—is a major contribution to our understanding the evolution of human societies.

one of my favourite books
jared diamond connects the factors that underly "history's broadest patterns" and paints a fascinating and compelling picture. in fact, many of his arguments are so well-structured and obviously reasonable that, in hindsight, i felt stupid for not connecting the dots by myself.
the book is very well written, with colorful anecdotes and cleverly placed questions for the reader/listener to pause and consider how he/she would answer this question.

Too many flawed arguments
Many interesting ideas, but too many flawed arguments, and poor research. The central theme maybe true, that the enviroment dictacted different peoples historical development, not any racial differences. This book however is just too flawed in its arguments, and some of the cited examples from history are just wrong. Hopefully the themes will be taken by others, who can bring a more crital eye to the subject.

Totally compelling and full of surprises
Humanity over the last 13000 years. Who won. Who lost. When. And why. You won't know unless you read this book.
Many surprises. Best of all: How and why did an expedition set out from Borneo, sail 4000 miles across the Indian Ocean and successfully colonise Madagascar 2000 years ago?
The reader is outstanding and you will not want to stop at any point.

Excellent read
Jared Diamond makes compelling arguments for the role of environmental effect on the evolution of human societies in different parts of the world. This is a must read for anyone interested in what has shaped our modern societies the way we find them today.

Read it and share its insights everywhere!
This is a book that explodes so many of the myths propounded by ignorant racists. It should be on everyone's reading list. And - once you've understood the arguments - use them to undermine racism wherever it exists.
Beautifully argued, with an abundance of evidence and an awe-inspiring breadth of knowledge.
A brilliant, brilliant book.

Great book and perfect narration
Very interesting view on human history. I like the way author is by questioning the opposite making the history logical. Also I like how it is narrated with very clean and calm voice and with no sensation which is unfortunately usually preferred in other audio books.
