Summary

As the lead singer of Modern Romance he toured the world, as the screenwriter of Kinky Boots he conquered Hollywood, now comes Geoff Deane's latest act as a quite brilliant and witty ranconteur in his hilarious memoir From Mohair Suits to Kinky Boots….

Geoff has been a fly-pitcher working out of a suitcase, and flogged suits on Brick Lane market in London's East End. He was the singer in a much-loved culty punk band the Leyton Buzzards, a floppy-haired pop star in Modern Romance, a songwriter, and record producer. He wrote a gay anthem for John Waters drag queen muse Divine, worked as journalist and restaurant critic for style magazines The Face and Arena, before becoming a successful writer and producer of TV comedy. And then he wrote a couple of films, one of which, Kinky Boots became a Tony Award winning Broadway stage show.

This is the tale of life lived large, a collection of uproarious and often moving stories from Geoff's youth as a clothes obsessed Jewish suedehead, hanging out in Tottenham dancehalls, via straight Bowie Boy frequenting London's gay clubs, gender confusion in Manhattan's Studio 54, and on to huge career success as a screenwriter.

With a cast ranging from local oddballs to international celebrities, Geoff Deane's unique take on the world is only matched by his extraordinarily rich use of language, with a smattering of Cockney rhyming slang, Yiddish and Polari.

Introduction by Maurice Gran

‘There are worse groups than Modern Romance. But can anyone seriously think of one?' - Morrissey

Crying with laughter

I’d heard heard about this audio book from friends and they said I must buy as it will make me laugh .
They wasn’t wrong !
I was laughing so hard from the off .
I haven’t laughed like this since I don’t know when , probably was at school but can’t remember to be honest .
So not only did it make me laugh it also put me in a good frame of mind for the day .
Also the the way he tells the stories on the audio are just as good as any stand up you’ll see .
I highly recommend this book so much .
I also want to thank the author.
Actually feel little bit gutted now I’ve finished the book .

Engaging and funny.

Well crafted and, in places, very funny. I'm sure there must be more of these hilarious anecdotes just waiting to be put into a second volume.

A Comic Masterpiece.

Warning! It’s probably advisable not to be drinking a cuppa whilst listening to “From Mohair Suits to Kinky Boots”. Unless, of course, you enjoy tea spouting from your nose due to the frequent bouts of spontaneous and uncontrollable laughter this book engenders.

Author, Geoff Deane , was once the head honcho of early-eighties’ band “Modern Romance” of whom Morrissey quipped, “There are indeed worse groups than Modern Romance. But can anybody seriously think of one?” While I never cared for Modern Romance myself, I absolutely LOVED this book. It’s brimful of laugh-out-loud anecdotes and unconventional characters from Geoff’s fascinating and eventful life. Elton John’s in it too.

It’s also beautifully written, with some hilarious use of East London slang. Lots of laughter and the occasional tear. A much-needed comic tonic which is guaranteed to raise your spirits in these truly depressing times.

Absolutely brilliant

To have the incredibly talented Geoff read his book is something not to be missed. It is intimate and is as if only you are aware of his mainly hilarious sometimes extremely moving recollections of his full life this far. Oh how I need a sequel. Thank you Geoff for the privilege of sharing what has to be in everyone's home! Magnificent!

Once you start reading it is difficult to put the book down but due to a busy schedule i downloaded the audio to listen on the go. i can say it is absolutely brilliant! Was laughing so much, so entertaining. Geoff has a talent in telling his story not only in words but on audio too. I loved every part from start to finish and anytime i need my day brightening up i will listen to this. There's something comforting hearing Geoff's voice. Thank you. Anita xxx

Funny and interesting

I loved this book, I laughed out loud in places, particularly about looking like the man from Chicory Tip - a walk through someone’s life from the east end of London to LA and back. Highly recommend

I enjoyed the comedy

I was not a big fan as it’s not really my cup of tea.
I can’t fault the writing etc it’s just not for me but I do feel its well written and heartfelt.
