Summary

Winner: New Writer of the Year – Specsavers National Book Awards 2012.
When Harold Fry nips out one morning to post a letter, leaving his wife hoovering upstairs, he has no idea that he is about to walk from one end of the country to the other. He has no hiking boots or map, let alone a compass, waterproof, or mobile phone. All he knows is that he must keep walking - to save someone else's life.
Harold Fry is the most ordinary of men. He just might be a hero for us all.
Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent has starred in a huge range of films, from British favourites including Bridget Jones, Hot Fuzz and The Iron Lady, to Hollywood blockbusters such as Moulin Rouge, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the Harry Potter films. He is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.
Critic reviews
“From the moment I met Harold Fry, I didn't want to leave him. Impossible to put down.” (Erica Wagner, The Times)
“Harold Fry is infuriating, hilarious and completely out of his depth, but I held my breath at his every blister and cramp and, felt, as if by turning the pages, I might help his impossible quest succeed. Marvellous!” (Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand)
“The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry isn’t just a book I enjoyed reading, it’s a book I feel lucky to have read. It takes the most ordinary and unassuming of men and turns him into a hero for us all. Harold Fry faces the same questions we all do as we age, questions about the meaning of our lives, faith and love, but confronts them in a most surprising way. To go on this journey with him will not only break your heart, it might also just heal it.” (Tiffany Baker, New York Times best-selling author of The Little Giant of Aberdeen County)

Enjoyed the walk
Listening to anything narrated by Jim Broadbent is pleasurable. It was a good story written so you cared about the characters and wanted to know how things would resolve.

The prose in this book is so beautiful and so spare- it is a perfect book to listen to aloud. Touching and gripping story. Not to be missed!

Emotional.
I have loved this novel. Hopeful and uplifting for the most part but with the pain and cruelty life often throws into the mix at its heart. Being unwell myself I found certain themes somewhat upsetting, especially nearing the end . Litterally the final paragraph brought back all those feelings of hope, love and friendship and that we can't always win each of lifes battles but it really is never too late for everything to change and for me a reminder that the best things in life are free. ...the people we chose to spend ours with.
Please do not be put off by my review as it is lovely, not the complete sob-fest I may have made it sound.! Lifes ups and downs are so different for all of us, the downs heartbreaking , the ups incredible times of happiness, all of which become our memories and shape not only how we live our lives but, indeed , who we are. I found the author portrayed this theme with skill and realism making it a read that could, and should be enjoyed by many many people.

A book full of beautiful nuances
This is in no way an on the edge of your seat listen but it is a thoroughly heartwarming story, in all the right ways, that grips you onwards through Harold and Maureen's pilgrimage. It never gets overly sentimental nor gushy. The touches are refined, emotive and balanced. This is a story about life and how we can come from sadness and drudgery, full circle back, not quite to where we started, but somewhere that is a much happier place.

What an inspiring story
Harold is a very ordinary man, part grief-stricken part gently bonkers and he goes for the most unusual walk. It took me a while to like Harold and to will him on but the story of his opening out and the people he meets is lovely. It really rings true when he gets caught up with hangers on and I was beginning to fear for him and his sanity. I really liked the fact that the writer doesn’t fall into the trap of a slushy ‘feel good’ story book ending and the whole thing is more impressive for that. The side characters are also well drawn and I loved the way the cause of all the grief is slowly revealed. This is a gentle, impressive and memorable book. I had some trouble with the reading - Jim Broadbent is a wonderful actor, I know his voice exceedingly well and that caused me (for quite a while) to hear him and not Harold but gradually I found Harold in the reading. I’m now off to read Queenie’s story
