The novel that inspired the epic new movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.

Hugh Glass isn’t afraid to die. He’s done it once already.

Rocky Mountains, 1823. The trappers of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company live a brutal frontier life. Hugh Glass is one of the most respected men in the company, an experienced frontiersman and an expert tracker. But when a scouting mission puts Glass face-to-face with a grizzly bear, he is viciously mauled and not expected to survive. Two men from the company are ordered to remain with him until his inevitable death. But, fearing an imminent attack, they abandon Glass, stripping him of his prized rifle and hatchet.

As Glass watches the men flee, he is driven to survive by one all-consuming desire: revenge. With shocking grit and determination, he sets out on a three-thousand-mile journey across the harsh American frontier, to seek revenge on the men who betrayed him.

The Revenant is a remarkable tale of obsession and the lengths that one man will go to for retribution.

Bear with me.....

Where does The Revenant rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Up there with the best

Who was your favorite character and why?

The sheer grit and determination of Hugh Glass is mind-blowing, how a human can go through so much and come out stronger mentally more than physically is astounding

What does Jeff Harding bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Jeff Hardings American drawl and range of accents brought the story to life, vivdly

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

He's dead, but he won't lie down!

Any additional comments?

Book before the film

I made the mistake of listening to this book prior to watching the film. Consequently the film barely held my attention! The bonus superb, particularly the authors noted st the end telling the truth behind the story.

Movie could outshine the book

For starters I haven't seen the film - yet. It's on my list and the book hasn't changed my resolve to see it.

The Revenant focuses on one man and the tough environment he finds himself abandoned in. The setup is good, the characters are believable and the plot is solid but for whatever reason I found myself disappointed with the sum of the parts. Perhaps the build up was better than the climax and thus left me feeling like it could have ended better.

Something Hollywood might address?

The ending was a bit naff

The narration was good, however the book itself seemed a bit disjointed in places, and it just kinda stopped being a tale at the end, finishing with the focus on one of the tertiary characters which had not a great deal to do with the overall story line save to underpin the tenacity of a frontiersman. Maybe the film adaptation might make more sense when I watch it.

Material for a movie

Two comments from previous reviewers probably sum this up for me:
1 - the ending was a bit naff
2 - the movie was probably better

It's really just about "last man standing". The imagery is good, and there is clearly great material for Hollywood to build on - although I imagine they would have beefed up the ending somewhat. I kept waiting for the big reveal, or the grand finale- it never seemed to happen. It was just one long slog for poor Mr Glass...... Who knew so much death and drama could track one man and those who happened to be his travelling companions along the way.

The bit I found most interesting was the author's historical note at the end - where the back stories/ futures of some of the other characters were filled in. .... no spoilers here ....

Not sure I will bother with the movie though - I'm guessing it involves a lot of blood and snow?

Disappointed

I was expecting a lot more from this book as it has been made into a film, I found it to far fetched to really enjoy it but that is just my opinion.

My first book in the genre. Loved it!

I liked the characters and the extreme and perilous world these people lived in. The author and narrator did an excellent job of giving one a taste of the fur trade era on the front.

This book is not for the squeamish but I can highly recommend it to any adult reader.

Raw and beautiful

Man at his worst. Man at his best. The story has stayed with me: an individual thought returning unexpectedly.
