Summary

In a world where magic is real and evil walks amongst humanity, a young sorcerer is beset by enemies, both old and new.

Angelus Salvatore is the only necromancer in all of Boston, and his name is whispered warily by the undead and fellow sorcerers alike. He and his brother Isaac are the lone survivors of an attack by an army of the undead, in which Angel used a spell so powerful it forever marked his place in history. Now, years later, Angel struggles to balance his career as a teacher of the higher magical arts, his role as big brother, and a tenuous relationship with an Elder vampire from the local clan. When his brother's boyfriend is used as a pawn in a mysterious plot to draw Angel out, Angel is once again drawn back into the old hostilities that fueled the Blood Wars and led to his family's death.

Leaning on others for help is something Angel cannot do, and while he searches for clues as to who may be targeting him and his brother, Angel finds his heart steadily growing occupied with Simeon, Elder and vampire. Dealing with death magic and vampires on a daily basis may leave Angel jaded when it comes to life and staying that way, but the more time he spends fending off the ancient vampire's attention and affections, the more he realizes he wants to give in.

Can Angel find out who wants him dead, and keep his heart safe in the process? How can he fall for a vampire, when his whole family was torn apart by an army of the undead? Death stalks the streets of Boston's historic Beacon Hill...and there is no one more suited to battle against death than a necromancer.

Great story but really bad accents

I used whispersync for this book. The story is fantastic and had me enthralled from the start however the really really bad accents put on by the audio narrator almost caused me to not listen to this book. As an Irish person I'm actually pretty insulted with the Irish accent that the narrator used for Simeon. I'm guessing his inspiration was Tom cruise from Far and away. So bad.
However if you are able to drown it out the story is definitely worth listening to or if you cant then read it.

Great story, which is usual for SJ Himes

If you could sum up The Necromancer's Dance in three words, what would they be?

Intrigue romance and magic

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Necromancer's Dance?

Why choose one when you have the whole book!

What does Joel Leslie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He brings the humour and attitude of the characters to life. He can lean towards the dramatic with his narration, but still makes the characters real to you.

Loved it, bring on book 2!

Joel Leslie has done it again, he is so good at dialogue, especially clever, fast paced, slightly snarky dialogue that the story just flows seamlessly, the book is great anyway, but the narration totally brings it to life.

Loved it and want more of the same.

“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook .” I really enjoyed the world building in this story and was captivated by the narrator's skill at giving each character a distinct voice and, in the case of one of them, with a very believable Irish accent. I really enjoyed the magic and the way the author brought it to life with the descriptions of the incantations and imagery. I really want to say so much more but am too frightened of giving away spoilers to do so. Let's just say if you enjoy stories with magic, action, intrigue and romance with a dash of hot sex and even hotter vampires then this is the one for you.

Compelling listening

What made the experience of listening to The Necromancer's Dance the most enjoyable?

I love sourcery and magic in books. This one starts full on and never lets up the action.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Necromancer's Dance?

Most memorable parts or a few of them anyway, when Angel saves Greg and later Daniel and makes it plain that life is precious even misguided lives. When Angel realizes he belongs with Simeon and also when he realizes they are bonded. When Angel works magic and shows just how strong he is.

Have you listened to any of Joel Leslie’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I got this code from Joel Leslie because I love his narratives and just wanted to hear his work. I usually listen while driving, the story itself turned me into an antisocial hermit, earphones on and not letting anything distract me till I'd finished. I really can't wait for The Necromancer's Dilemma.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are moments of humour, moments of real sadness and moments that make you angry on the characters behalf.

Any additional comments?

A new to me author, writing one of my favourite genres, read by one of my favourite narrators. Sheer bliss in an audio.

Better in audio than print :)

I read and enjoyed the print version of this book, but it totally came to life above my expectations through the audio. Joel Leslie's ability to bring a character uniquely to life is showcased in this audio - he manages American, French, Irish and English (my favourite!) accents without sounding put on - and at the same time the characters are littered with the emotions of the story and it's wonderful. Angel comes across as powerful and snarky yet vulnerable and unsure about love, whilst Simeon is both confident and a little nervous about what he feels for Angel - and it's beautiful.

This is a good solid love story, engaging throughout weaving magic and vampires together in a very enjoyable way.

A Sorcerer and a Vampire what a perfect pair

I haven't really read books with Vampires before they never caught my attention, but if they are of this standard then I have been missing out. The depth of paranormal world building is superb. Vampires, Sorcerers and humans fitted together so well I could picture contemporary Boston like this. My imagination was greatly enhanced by Joel Leslie's narration. The voices he gave to blunt snarky Angelus Salvatore (Angel) the Necromancer and 400+yr old Elder Vampire Simeon were spot on. The gruff Italian American and the lilting Irish was lovely to listen to. Between the narration and the wonderful dialogue when I closed my eyes I could easily picture everything as if I was watching a tv program.

Angel and his brother Isaac are the only ones left of their powerful family after the end of the blood wars. Now someone is trying to kill Angel, murdering others along the way. The story mixes a whodunnit with the climax of a slow building attraction between Angel and Simeon. The whodunnit kept me guessing right to the end and both the romance and the mystery complimented each other blending perfectly.

Joel Leslie is a fantastic narrator. With him I know I am getting a quality audiobook. It's like listening to a one man play, all the characters are distinct and given as much attention as Angel and Simeon.

I wholeheartedly recommend The Necromancer’s Dance and will be looking out for book 2 The Necromancer's Dilemma.
I was given a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review
