Summary

When Ravi Kapoor, an overworked London doctor, is driven beyond endurance by his disgusting and difficult father-in-law, he asks his wife: "Can't we just send him away somewhere? Somewhere far, far away."

His prayer seems to have been answered when his entrepreneurial cousin, Sonny, sets up a retirement home, recreating a lost corner of England in a converted guesthouse in Bangalore. Travel and set-up are inexpensive, staff willing and plentiful - and the British pensioners can enjoy the hot weather and take mango juice with their gin.

Wonderful

An uplifting and enjoyable read. I’ve seen the film of course so thought this would be a great thing to listen to whilst sewing and so it was. It evokes the atmosphere of India ( not that I’ve been) and the characters are really well drawn. Slight differences from the film but that’s to be expected. Nina Wadia is really the star. Her narration is PERFECT.

Preferred the film version.

Disappointed, but appear to be in the minority as far as reviews go. Maybe had I listened to the audio version first, I might have been of a different opinion. Trouble being, I kept waiting for a lot of the characters to be the same as portrayed in the film and story lines from the film to pop up and they didn't.
The cast of actors in the film were just so good, I just couldn't gel with the changes.
Brilliant narration though.

Depressing

Would you try another book written by Deborah Moggach or narrated by Nina Wadia?

I read Heartbreak Hotel by this author before I read this and thoroughly enjoyed it. Loads of great characters, plenty of laughs and some intrigue. Having enjoyed that book I bought The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. What a disappointment. Gloomy and depressing and full of unpleasant characters. I haven't finished this book but will maybe try again. I only got as far as the potential residents being on a plane to India and gave up, feeling every one (and more) of my 61 years. The book is well written, just not my type (no pun intended). The narrator read well with some great voices but overall this book made me sad.

Would you ever listen to anything by Deborah Moggach again?

Yes, I will try her books again.

Did Nina Wadia do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Sometimes I thought there were more actors, not just one.

Good Start

But after an hour it seemed to fizzle out, I lost Interest after that and I can't even remember finishing it.

Disapointing

I first saw the film and I liked it. I generally think that films are never as good as the books on which they are based. However, in this occasion I was very disappointed. I couldn't even finish listening I found the book so patronising to old age.

Disappointed

After reading the reviews on Audible, I expected a really enjoyable book, but I was bitterly disappointed. The narration is pleasing enough, although I cannot understand why so many narrators fail to inform themselves about the pronunciation of proper names before recording a book. Surely, James Naughtie is well enough known for a reasonably educated and informed narrator to pronounce his name correctly. However, these are minor gripes compared to the book itself. What an assembly of stereotypes, and rather outdated stereotypes at that: They are all there: the dirty old man, the married couple from different cultures facing difficulties, the elderly woman discovering herself after years of living in the shadow of a husband, the Indian entrepreneur, the woman past her prime who finds a bed companion and some jolliness. How very tiresome. Give me the film any time. It may be lightweight, but the script (fortunately only loosely based on the book) in conjunction with the outstanding performances of the cast make the characters believable, which is more than be said for the book. Spend your credits on worthier fare.

Doesn't compare to the film

I have seen the film a couple of times and really enjoyed it. Before downloading I read previous comments which said the book is better than the film, but I disagree. Deborah Moggach deserves all the credit for coming up with the idea of a group of oldies retiring to India, but for me the book doesn't have the spirit and humour of the film, though it did its best to convey the spice of life in India. The narrator was good but I really couldn't get into so many named characters, they never really came to life for me.
