Summary

A major film starring Brie Larson.
Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
Shortlisted for the Orange Prize.

Unsentimental and sometimes funny, devastating yet uplifting,
Room by Emma Donoghue is a story of boundless maternal love. Read by a full cast of narrators.

Scared is what you're feeling. Brave is what you're doing.

Jack lives with his Ma in Room, which has a locked door and a skylight, and measures 11 feet by 11 feet. He loves watching TV, and the cartoon characters he calls friends, but he knows that nothing he sees on screen is truly real – only him, Ma and the things in Room. Until the day Ma admits that there’s a world outside . . .

Told in Jack’s voice, Room is the story of a mother and son whose love lets them survive the impossible...

Critic reviews

"Emma Donoghue's writing is superb alchemy, changing innocence into horror and horror into tenderness. Room is a book to read in one sitting. When it's over you look up: the world looks the same but you are somehow different and that feeling lingers for days." (Audrey Niffenegger)
" Room is one of the most profoundly affecting books I've read in a long time. Jack moved me greatly. His voice, his story, his innocence, his love for Ma combine to create something very unusual and, I think, something very important.... Room deserves to reach the widest possible audience." (John Boyne)
"I loved Room. Such incredible imagination, and dazzling use of language. And with all this, an entirely credible, endearing little boy. It's unlike anything I've ever read before." (Anita Shreve)
"I’ve never read a more heart-burstingly, gut wrenchingly compassionate novel . . . As for sweet, bright, funny Jack, I wanted to scoop him up out of the novel and never let him go. In him, Donoghue has created 21st-century fiction's most uniquely loveable voice. She deserves to win this year's Man Booker Prize." ( Daily Mail)
"extraordinary power of Donoghue's utterly gripping story which, although not essentially just hers, has never been told in such a way before." ( Mirror Book of the Week)
"In filling this book with things that are both truly horrific and rather lovely, Emma Donoghue has achieved a work that is deeply unsettling on every level. It is a strange paradox that a book about imprisonment and torture should have become an arena for discussing the proper care and love of children. I think I am glad to have read it." ( Financial Times)
"What saves this beautifully nuanced book from being in any way a voyeuristic reaction to true crime is less the descriptions of captivity than the inevitably changing nature of the child / parent relationship, which Donoghue explores here so minutely, recognisably and exultantly." ( Sunday Telegraph)

A gripping story - suspense to the end

What made the experience of listening to Room the most enjoyable?

I was gripped by the story and listening to this version made the characters and situation more vibrant. I couldn't stop listening to this book, car, house and work I was gripped!

What other book might you compare Room to, and why?

This book is like no other that I have read or listened to, it was touching, creepy, uncomfortable and inspiring in equal measures. It is a very unique story so can't compare to any others.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

I liked the change in voices, the pace and how she built up the tension. The narration accurate portrays the emmotions benhind the story.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Unmissable - how would you cope !

Any additional comments?

A fabulous pace book, which makes you cringe, smile, cry and laugh at different places. It is a very sentimal and touching booking which gives a good pyschological insight into life on the inside and outside.

absolutely loved this book

I loved this book sadly I got the attention span of a Nat and I tend to struggle reading physical books and this audio really helped me enjoy this book completely. I wasn't a little sad with the ending not that it's bad it's a perfect end just a little bitter sweet cause it meant it wasn't finished and I wasn't enjoying the story so much lool. I kind of wish we got more of happy ending but the original ending wasn't perfect for the story and I'm just finding it hard to let go it wasn't sooo good. so yeah the performances were awesome I felt really invested and apart f the story it wasn't brilliant and beautifully done.

One of my favorites

Having read the reviews saying how annoying the narration is I was put off this but then decided to give it a try. I loved it! The boys voice did not annoy me at all and I was totally hooked to the moving and funny story right from the start! This is one of my favorites, does not beat 'The Help' but a close 2nd! Give it a go!

Gripping, I listened over 2 days, couldn't stop!

Well written and cleverly told, Room is a psychological thriller. It messes with your head as you try to make sense of the horrible situation the characters find themselves in. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in child development or who can relate to the mind of a 5 year old. Jack is an inpirational character for whom you have both both empathy and awe. Actually grew to like the narration voice!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Even though at first the narration seemed annoying/out of place, as you read on you realised why the voice was like it was. It fitted well with the story

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Constant reminder of how young Jack is

Any additional comments?

Compelling and emotive

I was almost put off by the reviews bemoaning the narration of the voice of Jack, but I'm so glad I decided to go ahead and download. The whole story from start to finish was very well written, and the narration I thought was spot on. It needs to sound child like, as it's the voice of a child.
I'm now intent on watching the movie, and of course there's now a stage play too. To see the world through the eyes of a child is a very enlightening thing.

So moving

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it at the start, but after a short while, I couldn’t put it down. The narration perfectly suits the characters. Can’t wait to see the film!

Brilliantly Harrowing

This book looks at both the worst and best of Humanity. The characters are all well rounded, interesting and complex, all the more impressive given that we see everything through the eyes of a 5 year old. Beautiful, terrible, and one of the best books I've read.
