It takes a lot of effort for Jimmy Crocker to become Piccadilly Jim - nights on the town roistering, headlines in the gossip columns, a string of broken hearts and breaches of promise. Eventually he bacomes rather good at it and manages to go to pieces with his eyes open.
But no sooner has Jimmy cut wild swathe through fashionable London than his terrifying Aunt Nesta decides he must mend his ways. He then falls in love with the girl he has hurt most of all, and after that things get complicated.
In a dizzying plot, impersonations pile on impersonations so that (for reasons that will become clear, we promise) Jimmy ends up having to pretend he's himself. Piccadilly Jim is one of P.G. Wodehouse's most renowned early comic novels, and has been filmed three times.

Some books I listen to with my children. Some I listen to alone.
The reading is good, and the plot enjoyably and comically complex. A good listen
Wodehouse masters mirth and is a craftsman of the English language. I bought this for my teenage sons for whom English is a second language. Wodehouse had them hooked and I was delighted to help either the odd bit of new vocabulary
This is a very early P G Wodehouse story, and he wasn't yet quite into the form he hit with the wonderful Jeeves and Blandings Castle stories. That said, his trademarks of gently affectionate humour, fantastically intricate plots which come together in the end, and beautiful prose are all there in an amusing and enjoyable tale.
Jonathan Cecil is quite brilliant at narrating the Jeeves books but he struggles with this one. Pacing is a little uneven, as is his characterisation and his American accents are a tad clunky and unconvincing.
I see that Audible has an abridged version of this book read by Martin Jarvis, my favourite narrator, which I suspect would be better value - as indeed would be any Jeeves book read by Jonathan Cecil. But failing that, I do think you might be better off reading the book.
