Summary

Ambitious and addictive, Only Time Will Tell is the first novel in Jeffrey Archer’s The Clifton Chronicles, beginning the epic tale of Harry Clifton, a working-class boy from the docks of Bristol. Read by Emilia Fox, known for her role in Silent Witness, and Roger Allam.

It is 1920, and against the backdrop of a world ravaged by conflict, Harry’s story begins with the words ‘I was told that my father was killed in the war’. Harry’s existence is defined by the death of his father and he seems destined to a life on the docks until a remarkable gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys school and entry into a world he could never have envisaged.

Over the course of twenty years, as the Second World War and the fight against Hitler draws nearer, Harry will learn the awful truth about his father’s death and of his own connections to a powerful shipping family, the Barringtons. And in doing so, he will change his destiny forever . . .

Richly imagined and populated with remarkable characters, The Clifton Chronicles will take you on a powerful journey, bringing to life one hundred years of family history in a story neither you, nor Harry, could ever have dreamt of.

Continue the bestselling series with The Sins of the Father and Best Kept Secret.

Great start to the series

both narrators are excellent, having heard Roger Allam in cabin pressure, he did a great job in this and I will look out for other books he narrates in

Insightful

Jeffrey Archer does write a good story. This book really does give one an insight into human nature, both good and bad.

The narration, as usual, was very good, which made for a very enjoyable listen.

Keep them coming

Would you consider the audio edition of Only Time Will Tell: Clifton Chronicles, Book 1 to be better than the print version?

This set of books is fabulous (although you could listen to them as stand alones I would recommend buying the set and start with the first.) They are a true saga that spancs generations of the same families and see's excellent charecter development and good attention to detail. It is easy to ampathise with the charecters and you will develop firm favourites! The narration is excellent

Ready for Book 2 by Sarah, Oxford UK

Was intrigued by the new Clifton Chronicles and the first book does not disappoint especially if you enjoy this style of epic family drama. Entertaining characters who tell their stories from different viewpoints and the pace builds as the the plot develops to a cliffhanger of an ending. Really enjoy Roger Allam's interpretation of the characters as well. I have already downloaded the second book.

Thankfully there is a sequel

Finished listening to this yesterday. First thought was oh no! you can't leave it there!. Thankfully there is a sequel - what a relief. Jeffrey Archer never disappoints in his writing. Only decision now is whether to leave it for my next holiday but I don't think I'll be able to. I want to know what happens to Harry. The narrators add to the pleasure of the story for me, wish Roger Allan read more of the books I download.

A great story

Lots of twists and turns and interesting characters, all connected to each other over the years. Told over twenty years the story managed to keep your interest throughout.

Definitely worth a go!

Fab, was a really good chance pick for me.
Not quite on the scale or quality of Ken Follets, Fall Of Giants, which is similar but this is a smaller scale very good alternative. Narrators are brilliant, really sad the next lot isn't Roger Allam but hope the stories will be just as good
