Summary

In this new stand alone novella from New York Times best-selling author Laini Taylor comes the story of a funny and fantastical first date. In Night of Cake & Puppets, Taylor brings to life a night only hinted at in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy – the magical first date of fan-favorites Zuzana and Mik. Told in alternating perspectives, it's the perfect love story for fans of the series and new readers alike.

Petite though she may be, Zuzana is not known for timidity. Her best friend, Karou, calls her 'rabid fairy', her 'voodoo eyes' are said to freeze blood, and even her older brother fears her wrath. But when it comes to the simple matter of talking to Mik, or 'Violin Boy', her courage deserts her.

Now, enough is enough. Zuzana is determined to meet him, and she has a fistful of magic and a plan. It’s a wonderfully elaborate treasure hunt of a plan that will take Mik all over Prague on a cold winter's night before finally leading him to the treasure: herself! Violin Boy’s not going to know what hit him.

All the joy

Loved this sweet, wish enhanced story - nice to have it shared with us in such a joyful way. And we get a little bit of blue haired Karou too.

Favourite line goes to Violin Boy (when imagining kissing the Rabid Fairy): 'I want to steam her up like a bathroom mirror and write my name on her' - or something like that!

All the light and none of the darkness. Beautiful.

VA doesn't suit

Laini's Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy is my favourite by far and listening to this after them is jarring, the voice actor for Zuz is English in this one, while Zuz is from Prague... doesn't suit and couldn't feel dragged into the story at all

Fabulous performances of a magical book

What a treat to have such a great reading of a delicious sidestep story. I always enjoyed Zuzanna and Mik in the Smoke & Bone books, so am delighted to have the one night glimpse of their start.

Night of Cake and Puppets review

Amazing storytelling. Took a while to get used to the voices as they are different to the ones in the main story but the narrator's are great once you get used it.

hard for me to stay concentrated

It's a bit frustrating because why is it read in an English accent? none of the other books are which doesn't make you feel like you're in the same story. Susanna is from prague and all the other books have had the correct accent.
