Summary
The first in Ken Follett's breathtaking Century Trilogy, Fall of Giants is a captivating novel that follows five families through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for votes for women.
A World in Chaos
1911, a thirteen-year-old boy, Billy Williams, begins working down the mines as George V is crowned king. The escalating arms race between the empire nations will put not only the king but this young boy in grave danger.
A Terrible War
Billy’s family is inextricably linked with the Fitzherberts, the aristocratic owners of the coal mine where he works. And when Maud Fitzherbert falls in love with Walter von Ulrich, a spy at the German embassy in London, their destiny also becomes entangled with that of Gus Dewar, an ambitious young aide to Woodrow Wilson, and two orphaned Russian brothers whose plan to emigrate to America falls foul of conscription, revolution and imminent war.
A Revolution That Will Change Everything
When Russia convulses in bloody revolution and the Great War unfolds, the five families’ futures are entwined forever, love bringing them closer even as conflict takes them further apart. What seeds will be sown for further tragedy in the twentieth century and what role will each play in what is to come?
Continue the captivating Century Trilogy with Winter of the World and Edge of Eternity.

Fantastic Saga
Any additional comments?
This book was fantastic, I got really drawn into the story and into the characters. They're well written and the story takes you through some of the hardest times in the 20th century. It seemlessly moves from the UK, US, Russia and Germany intersecting the 5 main families easily. This is going to be a wonderful series if the next books are so well written.

Any additional comments?
its a story that's actually written in American although read by an Englishman. I'd assumed it was written in English so was a bit disappointed. Quite a good read but won't bother with more of this author's books.

Loved it
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so much so I am now moving on to the second book in the trilogy.
Seeing history through the eyes of such a diverse mix of characters was interesting and the author’s research of the history of the time is clearly extensive. I might know that Winston Churchill didn’t visit a fictional location but as the author says at the end - he could have, it is not in the least far fetched.
The narrator is excellent.
I am quite sorry to be at the end of the book but I have another 2 to look forward to.
Highly recommend this audio book if you are interested in an epic historical saga told through the lives of a range of people and families

Nothing short of incredible!
An amazing history lesson disguised as a very compulsive read. This is the most addictive and compelling WW1 history lesson you could ever come across! Interweaving brilliant full characters with differing opinions, perspectives, and motives on the goings on.
Epic work!

Fall of Giants
Excellent mix of fact and fiction, superbly read by John Lee. Set against the backdrop of the WW1 it follows the lives of several main characters, beautifully written by Ken Follett, he covers all the emotions; one minute I felt sad enough to cry the next I find myself laughing out loud. I thoroughly recommend this book. Now onto ‘Winter of the World’ where I hope to meet some of the same characters and their next generation as we move on through the ages. Epic story.
