Entertaining Scottish narrative.
Rory and Sybil's perilous flight from the king's men as they flee to the Highlands unaware treachery and murder await them.
I've listened to several of his performances and they have all been good. He is a very talented narrator.
No extreme reactions, but it's a well written story with an interesting plot.
It's good entertainment with lots of twists and turns to keep your interest.
"Wonderfully complex female lead is extraordinary!"
Claimed by a Highlander by Margaret Mallory is an exciting historical romance set in early 1500's Scotland. Like all of Margaret Mallory's novels, it is well written with well developed characters. As an added bonus, you get several characters from the history books mixed in with the fictional characters featured in this story.
Claimed by a Highlander centers around Lady Sybil Douglas who is fearing a hangman's noose after her infamous brothers commit treason and flee to France, leaving her behind to fend for herself. Once a favorite in the Queen's court, Sybil fears for her life as guards approach her family home in Edinburgh until a handsome stranger suddenly appears. Highlander Rory Mackenzie claims he and Sybil are bound by a marriage contract and he is compelled to protect her. After spending several nights in each other's company, and after escaping several terrifying adventures, Rory begins to see Sybil as not so much lowland baggage, but as a potential life partner IF she can learn to live in the Highlands.
And, of course she can learn to live in the Highlands! Sybil is one of the smartest, politically savvy, badass characters I've read in years. She makes her husband and his clan much stronger because she can diffuse a clash between clans simply by inviting the opposing side to dinner. It's not quite that simple, but I enjoyed reading about all of Sybil's antics and how they turn out. Thank you, Margaret, for writing such a wonderfully complex female character!
I listened to the Audible version of this book narrated by Derek Perkins. He did an outstanding job. He clearly differentiated between male and female voices and changed the tempo in the performance when warranted. His smooth undertones and character nuances made for an extremely enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this audiobook!
"The storyline and reading is just beyond great"
This particular reader was great. This is book 2 to the first one I have ever heard him read. so talented.
"What a great series! Hate that it takes so long for next one!"
This is another great book by Mallory! Well
Written well read. Characters well developed. I can't really find any faults. You are kept intrigued throughout the listen. This book is well worth the credit and one of the ones you listen to several times.
"Not the Highlander for me"
The narrator was terrific. Rory was fickle.
Yes, I'd like to give her another chance. I love Highlander books.
He was very easy to listen to and also tell all the characters apart. He made it exciting when it needed to be.
I hope the next hero in Ms Mallory's book is not such a jerk.
"Sexy & enjoyable"
I loved it! Sybil is a great character. It was frustrating at times...but overall a wonderful listen.
I loved the story, but it was not as good as the first book. Too many killings. I hate that the author takes such a long time to put out other books in the sequel. I also dislike the fact that the sisters never get together, a second book should include old characters.
"Claimed by a Highlander is non stop excitement!"
I was fortunate enough to receive the audio copy of this amazing book in exchange for my honest review. I can honestly tell you that I loved every minute of it! There is non-stop excitement filled with a romance fraught with many of the same foibles we experience in our own relationships.... anger, jealousy, distrust, fear, as well as unconditional love and trust. If you enjoy reading historical romance novels, you may recognise several of the characters mentioned as having been actual historical people of the period, as well as many of the beautiful historic landmarks and sites steeped in Scottish history and still visited today. Derek Perkins does an amazing job of bringing the various characters to life through his exceptional vocal talent. He presents the story in such a smooth and seemingly effortless way, that you easily find you've become caught up in the story as if you were there. There honestly was never a dull moment in the entire story! I can't wait to hear Margaret's story next. This is a book I can easily recommend to anyone who loves this reading or listening to this genre of books. Don't miss out on this one! This entire series promises to be one of those you can't put down, and read or listen to again and again! 😀
