Summary

UNLOCK THE MAGIC OF THEATRE THIS CHRISTMAS - GO BEHIND THE CURTAIN WITH WEST END LEGEND, MICHAEL BALL IN HIS FIRST MEMOIR

In 1989, a young Michael Ball landed the lead role in the musical Aspects of Love. It was a moment that changed his life forever. It was the first time he worked with legends of the stage like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Trevor Nunn; the show featured his smash hit song, Love Changes Everything, which rode high in the charts for 15 weeks; it was then, also, that he first met his long-term partner Cathy McGowan and battled back against the stage fright that had threatened his career. Over three decades later, Michael returned to a new production of the same show where he made his name, and with a lifetime's worth of stories to tell.

In Different Aspects, Michael takes us backstage inside the making of a West End hit, while also diving back into his memories to share untold anecdotes and explore a glittering career that has made him a household name - from his first stage experiences in Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera, to delighting and shocking his audiences in equal measure in Hairspray and Sweeney Todd, as well as his chart-topping musical success (and some howlers too!). Exploring Michael's life, career and relationships alongside the pitfalls and pratfalls of modern theatre, Different Aspects is the story of a life lived on the stage. There will be laughter, tears and an abundance of heart. There's even some Roger Moore, though, famously, not quite enough.

Take your seats ladies and gentlemen, the lights are dimming, the performance is about to start.

Absolutely brilliant.

I'm a huge Michael Ball fan going right back to the beginning so really enjoyed him reading his own book. The discussion of Aspects 2 was especially insightful into the changing moral views of our society, as was hearing some of his views on the 'business' side of showbiz. I highly recommend it.

A tale of memories

Excellent book recounting the memories of Michael Ball in Aspects of Love I & II, made even more enjoyable by listening to the man himself.

Fantastic

What an amazing listen, just wish we had made it to the show in October but sadly cut short and wasn’t able to squeeze it in.

Genuine and Endearing

I cannot recommend this enough. It's a fascinating insight into musical theatre for those of us who don't really know anything about it and just love the songs and stories. It's funny, positive (despite him admitting to having dark moments). He says it how it is, certain language and all, and he is so complimentary about so many of the people he has worked with. He admits to the many times he's messed things up, is a self professed lover of corpsing and talks of the many times he and others have corpsed on stage. It is a very endearing book. The best way to consume it in my view is here because not only does he read it himself but he occasionally sings the lyrics when he mentions them. It is so, so very clear throughout that this is a man who loves his industry and that love is shared with us all. I was never particularly interested in aspects of love but now, I really want to explore it. From the perspective of theatre and plays (not musicals), it was also very reassuring to know that my approach to certain things as a director (cast relationships) has been reaffirmed by a performer like Michael Ball.

Interesting skip through musical theatre

I am a big fan of Michael Ball and love his voice in the audio book as well as his singing voice. I can't give 5 stars as it skips too many interesting areas for a great autobiography. I learnt a lot though.

But I really enjoyed the top fives bonus material in the audio book and immediately listened to his choices of favourite songs to sing. Only his first and fifth choice would agree with my top five but it was great to hear that.

Engaging storytelling

Really interesting and informative stories, no assumption that the listener knows all the technicalities of the theatre. Really warm storytelling. Would have loved a bit more Les Mis. Bonus material unnecessary.

Brilliant book.

Excellent, funny well read book.

I saw the original Aspects on a theatre trip from my work.
When it got to the “lesbian kiss” a voice from beside me, ( my mum) said loudly, “ Well, I’ve never seen a show like this before”
How times have changed!

Hits the notes

I'm not a fan of musicals, apart from Mama Mia and Grease, but I do like Michael Ball.
The good thing about this book is it concerns itself with Michael's celebrity years and relevant work. No chapters about what parents did in the war kind of thing.
it's nicely read with Michael's self depricating humour and the backstage antics and name drops.
