Summary
Unleashed magic. Secret pasts. Hidden worlds. Welcome to the Dark City.
My name's Morgan Rook, supernatural detective, undercover agent, odd jobs man. Call it whatever you like.
I take out the nightmares, demons, and werewolves. The things that lurk in the shadows around you. Guys like us call them Nightkind.
And here I was, set to quit this dark life and retire to sunnier climes, except for one final job. There's always one. This time a call to eliminate a cruel, rogue vampire, named Mr. Tudor. Simple, right?
Sure. Until the bodies started piling up in a new wave of vicious occult killings leading scarily close to my own front door, sparking a series of deadly events that would make my years of fighting the Nightkind look like a cakewalk.
Add high-octane chases across the city, a game of shadows, and undead assassins all topped off by a trip into the terrifying world between worlds - the last place you'd ever want to find yourself.
And the clues...they're all adding up to something...something big...and they're right in the palm of my hand.
The missing piece of the puzzle? How in the hell I fit into all of this....

Come for the Memorable characters.
I enjoyed Dark City, between the solid world-building and characters I never felt like I "left" the story and in fact listened to the whole book straight through because of that.
My only criticism was that, it was a lot, there was a lot of effort to thrust the main character against or alongside just about every Supernatural you can shake a stick at while too quickly uncovering enough backstory to make the reader feel like the main character is powerful-special.
That diluted the mix a bit for me but as the first book in the series I understand that is an important reason to stand out and get a reader reading the second book, personally though my reason is actually the character Dopple who as he was introduced I couldn't get an image of anyone but Peter Lorre out of my head. Such a strange and wonderful side character who I hope to learn more about as I work my way though the series.
Also the fantastic narrator, this was my 4th(?) Shawn Compton narration and I enjoyed the total tone change immensely, quite bespoke for the PI genre.

Fabulous
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Morgan Rook is a jack of all supernatural trades , he kills demons , monsters and other dark things that lurk in the shadows.
I really enjoyed book 1 and have added the rest of the series to my wish list.

Urban fantasy with a supernatural PI
At times it almost seems like there's practically a template for some urban fantasy characters and this book checks off a lot of items on such a list, you have the somewhat downtrodden, snarky main hero with supernatural powers, nominally in the role of a private detective, add in the mysterious or unknown past and the author could end up with a very familiar book if they didn't handle these elements well enough.
Luckily, the author takes these familiar themes and adds more than enough to the main character and a varied supporting cast to comfortably move beyond the familiar, producing a strong and entertaining story with interesting world-building for any subsequent instalments in this series.
On the whole the narrator does a good job with this book, but could have perhaps injected a bit more life into their delivery to further enhance the characters.
Overall, a strong first book in this series and I will be interested to see how it progresses.

A great story.
I was given a free copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.
I gotta say I really enjoyed this book, the main character is very likeable. As a supernatural detective serise makes this quite unique, I'll not say anything about it as I'd not want to give anything away.
The narration is brilliant, reminds me of an old fashioned, black and white PI serise, where the PI has his thought narrated aloud. Brilliant!.
So all in all a decent book is I'd happily recommend this to anyone.
