Summary
Five-year-old Jimmy Higgins is brazenly snatched from the middle of a busy airport; but this is no ordinary kidnapping. Jimmy’s mother is Scarlett, a reality TV star who, dying of cancer, entrusted the boy to her friend Stephanie Harker. Now Stephanie, reaching into the past to discover the motive behind the abduction, soon encounters a shocking tale of murder and conspiracy, and is faced by the most difficult choice of her life.

enjoyable but not a pyschological thriller
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I actually enjoyed this book on the whole. The plot started off very well but it felt as if the writer hadn't actually decided until the last few chapters, who the culprit was. It was too long-winded and the ending was totally unrealistic and left too many questions unanswered.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Antonia Beamish?
Yes if the plot line is good, I am not normally put off by the narrator
Was The Vanishing Point worth the listening time?
I am not sure that I would have even have chosen this book if Val McDermids name hadn't been on the cover. Nothing like her usual writing style and disappointing for that reason.

I was so surprised at the ending
I took a breath when the ending was announced. A great book. Some of it reminded me of Jade Goody’s story but it was not identical so kept me guessing. A really good story and it did not bore me one bit. Loved it

The Vanishing Point
From the start this story when the young boy Jimmy was abducted lacked plausibility and continued to do so at most major points throughout the book. The first half of the book was descriptive and covered sufficient 'real time' to make the listener wonder who was actually looking for the abducted child. The FBI quickly gave up without ever actually doing very much and police in England displayed no interest at all. It was left to Stephanie (legal guardian to the abducted boy and her boyfriend policeman Nick) to progress the case. Really!! The FBI did very little and police in this country did nothing at all other than give Nick (policeman) permission to go ahead and take a look at it with Stephanie. Nick and Stephanie persuaded the case without any real sense of urgency ever being conveyed to the listener. The ending was partially obvious from early on in the book but I have to admit that I had completely 'wrong guessed' the whole ending.

Unrealistic
Gripping with many twists; however I felt really let down by how far fetched some of the plot was and especially how unrealistic the ending was - just not in keeping with the character and left more questions than answers. I felt really let down by the time I had invested in this story.

McDermid does it again.
I really enjoyed it, it was fast paced and beautifully read but found the ending rather unrealistic.
