Publisher's Summary

After the brutal homicide of a woman, the Oslo Police Force know exactly whom to call: brilliant and unorthodox police investigator Harry Hole. When he suspects a link with one of his cold cases, it's a race against time to catch the elusive killer.

There's a new killer on the streets.

A woman is found murdered after an Internet date. The marks left on her body show the police that they are dealing with a particularly vicious killer.

He's in your house.... He's in your room....

Under pressure from the media to find the murderer, the force know there's only one man for the job. But Harry Hole is reluctant to return to the place that almost took everything from him. Until he starts to suspect a connection between this killing and his one failed case.

He's out for blood....

When another victim is found, Harry realises he will need to put everything on the line if he's to finally catch the one who got away.

    "Depressingly gruesome"
Would you try another book written by Jo Nesbo or narrated by Sean Barrett?

Not so much a thriller as a torrid trawl through unimaginably bleak characters and horrifically dark deeds. No more Jo Nesbo for me.

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

The only good thing about this book is the reading. Even Sean Barrett cannot save what is in my view a repellent story.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment. Revulsion.

    Any additional comments?

It is turgid going. I gave up after a few chapters; unpleasant horror and not an intriguing crime story. Unrelenting gloom and misogyny, this is not a thriller but a catalogue of vile behaviours; not a good listen in any way. It is so gruesome I am surprised it is not accompanied by some sort of warning as to the content. I would give it no stars for story or overall rating if I could, even though the reading is good.

    "Norway's "Morse"? Maybe not."
Would you try another book written by Jo Nesbo or narrated by Sean Barrett?

Not sure. Although I like Sean Barrett's narration, in this case there seemed to be no break between chapters which made it confusing to listen to. Could be in the editing though? Also the sound levels seemed to vary so sometimes I had to turn the volume down and others couldn't hear at all.

If you’ve listened to books by Jo Nesbo before, how does this one compare?

Found it difficult to follow the story at times.

    Any additional comments?

The story contained, in my opinion, too much padding in the shape of Harry Hole's (rather sad) private life. Didn't add anything to the narrative.

    "Just too unbelievable"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I have enjoyed Jo Nesbos books very much and the Hrry Hole series but this one was just so over the top - i just couldn't really believe in it at all. OK some of his previous ones are a bit fantastic but this time it just didn't work - for me anyway.

What could Jo Nesbo have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Kept it believable

Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?

    Harry of course

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    The narrator

    "Brilliant as normal"

It makes me sad to know I am going to have to wait a long time for the next Jo Nesbo book. I've read/listened to all of the Jo Nesbo books and I am addicted. Sean Barrett is just the best narrator, I could listen to him all day every day, the characters portrayal is excellent. It hard to find something else to listen after this, but I do have other favourites.

    "A huge disappointment"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

    Someone who likes violence.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jo Nesbo again?

    No

Would you be willing to try another one of Sean Barrett’s performances?

    Definitely not.

    Any additional comments?

I found the story utterly boring, and the narration monotonous and difficult to hear. The characters seemed to have no identifiable shape - except that they were short on humanity. Struggled for a while, then gave it up. Sad that it was money wasted.

"Another edge of the seat novel."

Quite complex in its plot, but worthwhile. Lovely narration, as ever, by Sean Barrett.
I managed to fall in to one of Nesbo's traps, and was convinced of the guilt of one character - I do like his way of writing, and his characters are fun.

    "Better than ever"
What made the experience of listening to The Thirst the most enjoyable?

Having waited a while for a new Jo Nesbo audiobook, I was not sure if it would be as good as previous books. I loved the detail, the imperfections and the humanity of the characters

What did you like best about this story?

I suppose its the underlying qualities. On the surface it is a thriller, but under it, its about people and what makes us human.

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

He is one of my favourite narrators. He combines a very relaxed and laconic approach with a sense of drama.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    The young girl Marta

    Any additional comments?

I have looked online and found out some info about the way Jo Nesbo writes and find him an inspiration as a writer, and find his books very believable

"A bit too drawn out, but still a great listen."

I feel the overall story could have been more concise. This would have made it wonderfully thrilling and not just mediocre thrilling. However,Jo Nesbo has done it again and I still recommend this novel.

I had tears in my eyes in parts near the end, caused by knowing the history behind the characters.

Sean Barrett as wonderful as ever.

What made the experience of listening to The Thirst the most enjoyable?

There are many twists and turns, as you would expect from a Jo Nesbo novel. they don't always work. In this Novel they do. There is an abundance of psychological investigation which keeps the reader stimulated, whether true or not is neither here nor there. As usual there the obligatory references to music and literature. Haruki Murakami gets a mention which is pleasing as he is also one author I most admire. Pink Floyd are given special treatment. For this alone the novel geserves five stars.

What did you like best about this story?

Everything. I listened in two sittings. It helps when a novel is basically based upon the entire work of British Rock band Pink Floyd.

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is one of the best readers there is available. He is Harry!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

You are going to pay me for the tag line? Someone else can do their job.

    Any additional comments?

Just listen. It will be the best Crime tnovel this year. Although the recent Philip kerr addition was very good.
