Summary
The seventh book in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series.
There is one serial killer who has shaped and defined police profiler Tony Hill's life. One serial killer whose evil surpasses all others. One serial killer who has the power to chill him to the bone: Jacko Vance.
And now Jacko is back in Tony's life. Even more twisted and cunning than ever before, he is focused on wreaking revenge on Tony - and DCI Carol Jordan - for the years he has spent in prison.
Tony doesn't know when Jacko will strike, or where. All he knows is that Jacko will cause him to feel fear like he has never known before - and devastate his life in ways he cannot imagine...

Superb writing
Brilliant book my only personal negative is the amount of violence but apart from that there is no better crime writer

All good til the ending
If you could sum up The Retribution in three words, what would they be?
Typical Val McD
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The book was excellent and the narrator was pretty good too but the ending seemed a little strange, I won't give it away but it was one of those moments when you look at the time left and realise there is nothing more to come....what did really happen?
What about Saul Reichlin’s performance did you like?
His voice complimented the story and did not intrude, like a good referee, you should not actually notice the narrator
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, but I cannot say what otherwise it would spoil the moment....so why ask the question Audible???
Any additional comments?
Good but not great

Marvellous listen.
I've recently started this series again from book 1. This is one of the best stories in terms of content, complexity and depth. Carol and Tony's relationship takes an unexpected turn as the story unfolds.
If you like great crime drama you won't be disappointed.

Too long!
Didn't enjoy this as much as the other VMcD books. It took forever to get going and could have been 3 hrs shorter at least. Didn't feel empathy for the characters and the narration is not realistic or dynamic enough considering the subject matter. He makes the characters sound slow and predictable. A simplistic end to Jack, as if she needs to end the book with a publishing deadline looming.

Surprisingly gentle
Not McDermid's best work by far. Echoes of Nesbitt. Mundane and plodding, but entertaining.

Nothing original
I didn’t finish this because I wasn’t really interested in how the story unfolded. The characters lacked any originality and the plot felt a little predictable. I was also put off by the setting of ‘Bradfield’ near Leeds. As a Bradfordian, I am a little tired of the cliched prostitute serial killer tag. The Ripper was a horrendous period of our history - but it was 30 years ago - time to move on.

Dire narration spoiled the story
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator for the Audible version.
Would you recommend The Retribution to your friends? Why or why not?
I'd recommend a text version and advise them to avoid this Audible version
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Saul Reichlin?
Anyone. He sounded like a discombobulated Daley and I came close to returning the download. Very irritating and for me, it made me picky about the quality of some of the writing which I've never noticed in the Tony Hill series.
Any additional comments?
The story was ruined by the quality of the narration, so it's probably unfair of me to be overly critical. I've enjoyed other Tony Hill stories, but this one stretched credulity too far and felt contrived at times. But I'm not put off totally and will certainly read or listen to other books by Val McDermid. I'll avoid anything narrated by Saul Reichlin though.
