Summary

Simon Serrailler is faced with that most complicated of investigations - a cold case. Freak weather and flash floods all over southern England. Half of Lafferton is afloat. A landslip on the Moor has closed the bypass and, as the rain slowly drains away, a shallow grave - and a skeleton - are exposed. It doesn’t take long to identify the remains as those of the missing teenager, Harriet Lowther, last seen carrying a tennis racket while waiting for a bus. But that was 16 years ago.

How long will it take to trawl through the old, stale evidence and assess it anew?

Okay

Oldfashioned cop procedural with some interesting twists. Reader was good but the story just okay.

Enjoyed re-visiting the series on Audible

I had read all the books in the series some time ago, but this did not spoil my enjoyment of hearing them read on Audible. The narrator is particularly good. I understand there is another book due out this year so hope it will be on Audible too.

Several threads to keep you interested

I’ve recently listened to all the Simon Serrailler novels in sequence, some I’d already listened to and some new to me. I was interested to find out how the familiar characters were getting along and intrigued with the new crime mystery. Knowing the detective, his family and those close to him makes the book more than just a formulaic crime novel and provides plenty of interest to keep you going. This novel deals with difficult moral dilemmas and I thoroughly enjoy Steven Pacey’s narration. Am waiting for the next episode!

A riveting tale with murder, deception, and love

Solid characters, familiar through others in the series, interesting characters that bounce off each other.the puzzle of cold case murder, and puzzle of defining the truth.A great story skilfully told.

Marred by an Unsatisfactory Ending

It always amazes me when am author pays so much attention to detail for 90% of a book and then sacrifices all that authenticity by contriving an absurd fairy-tale ending. The story was really engaging, and I enjoy the continuing saga of the Serrailler family and its hanging threads to be pursued in the next one in the series. SPOILER ALERT. But for a detective who is so committed to justice for victims to take it upon himself to discontinue an investigation where there is a cast-iron certainty of a conviction for a very serious offence without even a reference to the CPS just beggars belief.

As good as ever

I love all the Simon Serrailler books on audio. Not only are the plots and characterisation great, but the narration is excellent too. I can't imagine anyone else narrating them. This one did not disappoint.

Betrayal of trust

I listened to this book as I didn't want to miss any of the story as I have heard the others in the series. However, other reviews were correct and this book was sadly disappointing! No real plot, lots of disconnected characters...maybe it will all come together in the next book!
I do hope so as I have really enjoyed the other books in this series. Let's hope the author gets back on form!!!

Weakest of the Series

What did you like best about The Betrayal of Trust? What did you like least?

Whilst I love the continuing series; the Serailler family, the continuity of the children growing up, life's events etc, this book felt unsatisfying. I felt that the romance was thin, not described with any depth. Should Simon not have been more conflicted given his previous moral stances? The outcome of the whodunit was deeply unbelievable.

Would you recommend The Betrayal of Trust to your friends? Why or why not?

I would only recommend this book because the rest of the series has been so good. I hope the next one will revert to excellence! I will be so disappointed if the decline continues.

What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?

I love Steven Pacey's performance, he is measured as Serailler, gruff as Simon's Father, and pretty good at the women on the whole. Tiny criticism is that he can make women sound rather prissy sometimes, but that's nit-picking. I would look for other books read by him.

Any additional comments?

Has anyone else noticed a howling mistake? In the previous book, Cat is told by Richard Serailler, her Father, that her mother had injected her now dead sister with potassium as a mercy killing. Nowhere to my recollection has Simon been told this.
In The Betrayal of Trust, Simon now knows, and inadvertently tells Cat, who is shocked and surprised.
Unless this is to be explained in further books, this is a major mistake and poor editing, Simon's reaction to this is not explored which given the obsession in the book with assisted suicide / death and his job is surprising at the very least.
