Summary
When defence barrister Geoffrey Mason hears the judge’s verdict, he quietly hopes that a long and arduous custodial sentence will be handed down to his arrogant young client. That Julian Trent only receives eight years seems all too lenient. Little does Mason expect that he’ll be looking Trent in the eyes again much sooner than he’d ever imagined.
Setting aside his barrister’s wig, Mason heads to Sandown to don his racing silks. An amateur jockey, his true passion is to be found in the saddle on a Thoroughbred, pounding the turf in the heat of a steeplechase. But when a fellow rider is brutally murdered – a pitchfork driven through his chest – Mason’s racing life soon becomes all too close to his working life. The prime suspect is one of their brethren, champion jockey Steve Mitchell; the evidence is overwhelming.
Mason is reluctant to heed Mitchell’s pleas for legal advice – but soon he finds himself at the centre of a sinister web of threat and intimidation. Mason is left fighting a battle of right and wrong, and more immediately, a battle of life and death ... his own.

Breathless
This audiobook suffers from what is becoming a quite common problem at the moment. The story is in the first person, told by a character who is 36 years old, but the actor narrating is actually 86 years old, and quite breathless at times. It makes listening to the story an unconvincing experience, particularly during the action sequences, and it seems the publishers should be paying more attention to their casting for first-person narratives, rather than sticking with old favourites.

Good enough story. Narrator many years too old.
The character is supposed to be a dynamic, tough and moderately young man. The story is good enough but not up to the standard of most of Dick Francis' books. However, Tony Britton is regrettably much too old to read this as a first person narrator. He reads well enough but his voice is that of an old man. It just doesn't work and grates on the nerves because the actions described are not credible for an old man.

absolutely terrible book
This is the worst book I have ever had on Audible, the reader was completely unsuitable for the characters he was to portray, everybody sounded as though they were over 65 and on their last legs, the plot is about a young man, age 36 and his tedious investigation of a murder on behalf of the accused. The long and bored explanation s of legal proceedures and racing rules drove us to making sacastic comments as we listened in the car on our Summer holiday. The very predictable villian was obvious very early on and the stupid behaviour of the main character was unbelievable. The romantic interest started off quite well but quickly the young lady became as stupid and long winded as her man. I usually quite enjoy Dick francis but this is appalling and would beg you not to waste your money or credit on this boring long and extremely irritating book

I agree with the previous reviewer, the story was ruined by the narrator. Trying to imagine this voice to be that of a 36 year old man was impossible; it acted as an irritant throughout the audio book.

Probably The Worst of Dick Francis.
Probably the worst Dick Francis novel, albeit with an assist from Felix Francis. How can anyone remain interested in such a repetitive, patronising text, a third of which is taken up by overwritten explanations of nearly irrelevant information about the rules of racing and judicial procedures. The number of times one has to apply the 'willing suspension of disbelief' shows a naivety in the writing and weakens the plot. As for the the characterrization, half of them sound like pantomime dames who are suffering from a surfeit of alcohol after attending a booze up in a retirement home. Also, given the fact that half them are comparatively young, what on earth is an aged actor doing narrating this novel, squawking and slurring his way through the text?

Good tale
Having read all Dick Francis' novels, I was curious how he could write any new ones. Turned out to be a great story, in keeping with all the previous books. Congratulations to Felix for continuing his father's great work.
Only complaint. ...as good as Tony Britten was, the old voice didn't suit the character.

Very disappointing.
This book has all the traits of a weak example of the genre. Every Dick Francis novel that I read taught me about a subject of which I knew little (gemstones, flying, insurance etc) and seamlessly wove the information into a rollicking good yarn. Regrettably, this particular outing for Felix Francis is just dire. The characters are one-dimensional and quite frankly, the reader has to have a vested interest in the protagonist for the story to work. I did not.

Fantastic audio book
Wonderful story and narration perfect. Well up to the usual standard of Dick and Felix Francis and read as always by Tony Britten who never fails to make it such an enjoyable listen.

Another great listen!
What a great time listening to a wonderful performance by Tony Britton. He is a master at bringing a novel to life and what a story it is! On to the next one!
