Summary

When two girls are abducted and killed in Missouri, journalist Camille Preaker is sent back to her home town to report on the crimes. Long haunted by a childhood tragedy and estranged from her mother for years, Camille suddenly finds herself installed once again in her family's mansion, reacquainting herself with her distant mother and the half sister she barely knows - a precocious 13-year-old who holds a disquieting grip on the town.

As Camille works to uncover the truth about these violent crimes, she finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Clues keep leading to dead ends, forcing Camille to unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past to get at the story. Dogged by her own demons, Camille will have to confront what happened to her years before if she wants to survive this homecoming.

Was OK...

To give the novel it's due it did have a twist and was shocking at points but I found it to be disturbing and not in an exciting way. Sexualising and describing the naked body of 13 year olds, under aged sexual encounters, self harming and drug taking...all in which can be in a book however I felt so much was repetitive and only for the shock factor, it boring and/or uncomfortable at points It unravels really quickly in the end, nothing surprised me, there were no characters that I liked and some I really disliked. All in all I feel for someone who doesn't read psychological thrillers often maybe they would like it although I didn't feel like there was anything clever in it and for the first time i think I can honestly say this would make a better film than a book!

Disappointing

I have had this author recommended to me and so this was a first time read (listen) and I'm afraid I was disappointed. The narrator was quite annoying at times with her over the top southern American drawl. I found it really slow to get started and the end was really predicable and also felt really rushed. It was all tied up in a page or two. I will give the author another go with Dark Places but so far I'm afraid I'm not impressed

great read

A startlingly honest good read with indulgent atmosphere and interesting characters. Well worth a read.

Started well

The novel was well written and didn't slacken its pace, the characters were mostly believable (until the end). The main character and her mother Adora were very well drawn. It could have been a five star review, but I found the ending too freaky and unbelievable.
All the female characters were a tad too psychologically damaged and scarred. The teenaged girls were unrealistic. I doubt the author has dealt with teenagers, because although they can be bitchy, sexually precocious, manipulative and provocative, these ones were literally too evil for words. The author treated men with much more respect.
I still recommend it as an absorbing read, just be prepared to suspend disbelief.

Full of southern charm and murder!

narration really enhanced story with the southern accent. story unwound slowly and dropped hints here and there until the twist at the end. main character demanded full empathy and sympathy - felt like I wanted to go into the story and talk to her. A great listen!

Quite predictable- narrator style is funny rather than thrilling

I knew you the killer was right away.... so it was just a Mayer on confirming it.

It was very coincidental and personal for the journalist who was reporting the crime...

Nothing new for me nor did it have the shock factor I'm afraid...

Narrator made me laugh and I had to keep telling myself this is a serious mystery book!!! Way too much animated for me and it makes you lose focus.

I would have enjoyed it more has the narrator been more serious.

Gripping with a very likeable main character

I really enjoyed this once I had got into it. It took a few chapters, but I kept going and am very glad I did

Beguiling

The story and plot are excellent. However it is the narration of Liza Ross that sets this apart. Liza Ross is superb.
