Summary
Simon Serrailler has just wrapped up an exhausting and difficult case for SIFT – Special Incident Flying Taskforce – and is on a sabbatical on a Scottish island when he is recalled to Lafferton. Two local prostitutes have vanished and are subsequently found strangled. By the time he gets back, another girl has disappeared. Is this a vendetta against prostitutes by someone with a warped mind? Or a series of killings by an angry punter? But then one of the Cathedral wives goes missing, followed by another young married woman.

THE WORLD OF SUSAN HILL .....
... is so hard to leave. One becomes totally involved with her people, aside from the amazing plots. The only down side is that the characters are always sitting down to friendly coffees, glasses of wine and delicious home-made meals which encourages frequent forays to the kitchen on the part of the listener. I really couldn't do without Susan Hill, or Steven Pacey, they are a perfect match.

just bliss
I can't rate the combination of Susan Hil and Stephen Pacey highly enough. Her writing is so natural, and the characterisation and dialogue are more important to me than the plots (of which there are always several on the go). His narration is perfect. Each member of the cast has such a distinctive voice that even when a scene opens with dialogue I always know who is speaking.
I have really got to know the characters well over the five books, and Susan Hill is not afraid to kill key members off, in a way which is very lifelike.
I'm just sad that I've reached the end of the audiobooks, though I think she has written at least one more.

Honest, Realistic, Sensitive...and Gripping!
What did you like most about Shadows in the Street?
Never knowing who was next! A character may be introduced to move the story forward, or they could be the next victim....you can never guess. And the people you think you might dislike you actually find a fondness for. As always DCS Serrailler's flawed character works well, and his character not being at the forefront of all the action is a welcome change from other 'detective heroes'.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Shadows in the Street?
So many! Ruth's unexpected spiral from 'normality'; the moments of friendship between Abi and Hayley; Leslie's 'thoughts of murder' of his work colleague; Hayley going to see Abi's children. But I especially liked the moment Judith turns up on Simon's doorstep...I have hoped for that and it was well timed!
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I so desperately don't want to spoil the story for others.....the scene where the woman comes round and doesn't know where she is, what is happening around her....the clever way you do not know WHO the person is! All the time you are listening for a clue...and then wondering where she is. Was she attacked? Will she be attacked again? Will she survive? And....WHO IS IT?!? Listen and enjoy the tension!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did!! Following two days in bed with flu but not well enough to start leaping about I indulged! To say I got grumpy when someone interrupted me would be an understatement!
Any additional comments?
Brilliantly narrated as always by Steven Pacey. His speed and timing are a perfect match for the Serrailler books!

Brilliant book
Steven Pacey is absolutely the best narrator I have ever heard - and I’ve now heard loads. He completely transfixes the listener as if listening to a play. Absolutely fantastic and brings to life the wonderful Serellier series (not sure if I spelt that right). The characters are so brought to life and you actually care about them. This is the book I’ve least liked in the series so far as I felt it rather predictable. But it doesn’t detract much from an overall fantastic listen and enjoyable whodunnit.

A bit Bergerac
This is not a fast paced detective story but probably a truer reflection of real life. The story was enjoyable but the narrator’s efforts to portray the female voices sounded a bit Alan Bennett.

Engaging
I listened to two from the series consecutively, probably a mistake as the plots merged and you realise that they are a tad interchangeable. Still, entertaining enough.
