The gripping new crime novel in the Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus series from New York Times best-selling author Faye Kellerman.
LAPD Detective Peter Decker is about to face a case that will push him to the limit... Residents in a local building have been complaining of a smell coming from an apartment rented by the eccentric inventor Hobart Penny. Nearly ninety-years-old, and a hermit for the last 25 years, it is not surprising that the reclusive genius has died without anyone's knowledge. However, as Decker steps inside, it's clear that Penny has died from anything but natural causes...
Penny's children describe their father as a cruel and vindictive man. His second wife knew a man with strange sexual appetites, while the owner of a Californian animal charity speaks only of a kind-hearted old man. But further searches not only add to the list of suspects, but find evidence of a disturbed, depraved mind.
So just who was Hobart Penny? A brilliant inventor, a generous philanthropist or a callous killer?

"Kellerman is an excellent writer" (The Times) "Very exciting" (Daily Mail) "Brutal but thoughtful and well plotted, fast moving and well told" (Observer) "Sensational" (Mirror) "Kellerman creates a claustrophobic atmosphere, against a background of seediness, violence and distrust" (Sunday Telegraph) "Kellerman moves her gritty mean streets LA plot along with breakneck pace" (Irish Independent)
good book beautifully read. good story, the suspense builds and builds and the story is very multi layered, we find Gabe and Yasmine in a side story. kellerman at her best. but beware same book as " the beast".
"A great read"

"Gripping performance and action packed"
For me, I like audio books, specially if the narrator is exccelent and great performance.
Peter Decker's interaction with Gabe. The story line was very realistic and kept me guessing. In the beginning I did not like the Gabe character but he slowly grow on you.
Mitchell Greenberg is absolutely excellent in his performance!
It totally action packed and fascinating!
I followed all the Peter Decker stories and loved all of them!
I liked the way the characters unravel the story, the human elements that came out in the teenager’s action, and the older characters reaction to that. The direct way Gabe speak, acting like a teen and talking like an old man. The way Rina and Peter interact give it that normality of a family life though I think this wonderful presentation of it is not always reality. It would have been nice to have some disagreement between the main characters to give it more of a real life type of story.
