Where murder is concerned, fiction cannot compete with real life.

The Peverell Press is losing money. The two-hundred-year-old independent publisher is still housed in its dramatic mock-Venetian palace on the Thames, but its ruthless new director, Gerard Etienne, wants to move to cheaper offices as part of his plan to save the company. Before he can push through any ambitious changes, though, he is found murdered, his body bizarrely desecrated.

Commander Adam Dalgliesh soon finds that the director had a host of dangerous enemies: a discarded mistress, a neglected and humiliated author, rebellious colleagues, disgruntled staff. But did any of them hate Gerard enough to kill him?

Struggled with the story over 3 months. Lost track of characters and struggled to engage. Excellent last few chapters though which I flew through.

Excellent narration, slow story, great ending

I read these books when they originally came out, but listening to them again, so many years later made me realise just how good a novelist she was. I think her books are even better on Audible than read
Daniel Weyman is absolutely superb and definitely one of my favourite narrators. He brought every character to life, especially the women, which so many narrators fail to do.
I also listened to A Certain Justice , absolutely brilliant too.

I found the plot a little here and there in places but it all came together in the end

Good read

I listened to the end because I was interested in the characters. However, the narrator’s boring monotonous voice made it difficult to stick with it and he really spoilt the end by making it so so dull. I intend getting the book on Kindle as I believe I will enjoy reading it myself, even thought I now know ‘who dun it’.

Dull narration spoilt experience

Thank goodness for authors like pd James. No gratuitous sex or violence just a great story well worked. I thoroughly enjoyed Daniel Weyman’s reading. Dalgleish is a detective without frills but humane. Good listen
