Summary
AMAZON BOOK OF THE YEAR 2011
WINNER OF AMAZON RISING STARS 2011
AMAZON EDITORS' CHOICE BEST CRIME NOVEL OF 2011
LONGLISTED FOR CWA JOHN CREASEY (NEW BLOOD) DAGGER 2011
Catherine has been enjoying the single life for long enough to know a good catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic, spontaneous – Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell.
But there is a darker side to Lee. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behaviour means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape. Four years later, struggling to overcome her demons, Catherine dares to believe she might be safe from harm. Until one phone call changes everything.
This is an edgy and powerful first novel, utterly convincing in its portrayal of obsession, and a tour de force of suspense.

Good listen but a bit predictable
Good story but a bit predicable. I didnt really like when they swapped narrators for 2 of the sections and not sure why they did that as for me personally it felt pointless, if they was going to have 2 narrators it would have been better to use him for Lee to make the character stand out more.

Outstanding!
This was a difficult book to listen to due to the subject matter, but also completely unputdownable It is a dark and twisted psychological thriller which is definitely not for the faint hearted. It's tense and it's brutal and a real emotional rollercoaster.
The writing is fantastic and the book is well paced and excellently plotted. The characters are realistic. My heart just broke for Catherine, and Ms Haynes did a brilliant job of portraying Lee who went from the charming man Cathy first met to the monster he became.
This is most definitely one the the best psychological thrillers I have read/listened to. Totally outstanding!

Far too long
The story line was good but the book was far too long. The narrators kept me listing but if I were reading the book myself I would have given up.

Brilliant
I struggled with this book at beginning but I am so glad I stuck with it, it is one of the best books I have listened to. The narration , when I got used to her accent and voice was superb and it had me on the gripped and on the edge of my seat. At times it was very hard to listen to as it contains graphic violence but well worth it … what a journey. Incredibly well written and very well narrated.

Annoying
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I wish I had bought something else, I found this book tedious and couldn't finish it. I only got to chapter 7 and got fed up with the hearing about the OCD that the character had. I
found it very repetitive, which I know was the point but boring to listen to.
I know people with OCD and I agree that is exactly what they are like so the description is great - I just got bored of hearing it over and over and over and over.
Perhaps in the physical book form it would have come across better.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Not sure as I didn't read enough to actually get to the story. I completely missed the different years so that made it confusing - again maybe the physical book would be better.
I guess it is interesting to see how people act with OCD if you don't already know, but I didn't get far enough into this book to discover what caused it.
Have you listened to any of David Thorpe and Karen Cass ’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Never listened to these two before but they were fine as far as I could tell.
Was Into the Darkest Corner worth the listening time?
Not for me.
Any additional comments?
Nothing in this book has made me want to read more. Chapter 7 is as far as I got and so far there is nothing there that kept me interested. Usually with a good book I am hooked within the first chapter.

No sure
Started a bit slow! Kept me until the end, easy to listen too and not a bad story. Bought as a deal of the day so satisfied

Not for me
Found the story very slow and didn’t like the narrators pseudo Lancastrian accent. Was not a thriller and far too many Mills and Boon scenes ‘ his firm muscular body pressed against mine’ type of text. Fast forwarded to last chapter after a couple of hours as pace was dreary.
