Summary

AMAZON BOOK OF THE YEAR 2011

WINNER OF AMAZON RISING STARS 2011

AMAZON EDITORS' CHOICE BEST CRIME NOVEL OF 2011

LONGLISTED FOR CWA JOHN CREASEY (NEW BLOOD) DAGGER 2011

Catherine has been enjoying the single life for long enough to know a good catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic, spontaneous – Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell.

But there is a darker side to Lee. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behaviour means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape. Four years later, struggling to overcome her demons, Catherine dares to believe she might be safe from harm. Until one phone call changes everything.

This is an edgy and powerful first novel, utterly convincing in its portrayal of obsession, and a tour de force of suspense.

Critic reviews

"Check the locks on your doors and windows and surrender to this obsessive thriller." (Karin Slaughter)
“This intense, gripping account of domestic violence and its aftermath is utterly unputdownable. A stunning debut.” (SJ Watson)
“From its uncompromising prologue - a young woman being bludgeoned to death in a ditch - Haynes's powerful account of domestic violence is disquieting, yet unsensationalist. This is a gripping book on a topic which can never be highlighted enough.” ( Guardian)
“A very impressive first novel. The pain and frustration of OCD is brilliantly evoked and I winced every time Cathy embarked on yet another ritual. The contrast between Cathy's two lives is cleverly drawn and the hesitancy in her new relationship is very believable. This is a fantastic personal read with plenty for a reading group to discuss.” ( NewBooks Magazine)
“Within ten minutes I couldn't put it down. I've always said that I would never be caught in an abusive relationship, as I'd be out of it at the first sign of a problem but after reading this book I realised that it really isn't that simple. There's a superb picture of the burdens of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). It's not enough to check once that the door is firmly locked. What if you didn't lock it properly? There's real dramatic tension in this book and when I got to the end the first thing that I did was to turn back to the beginning again.” ( The Bookbag)
“A tense and thought-provoking début novel with dark moments. Its portrayal of obsession is one that will send a shiver down your spine and you'll hope that you are never in that position. But don't look for a "pat" ending - it seems that things never end the way one hopes! This début novel by a police intelligence analyst is certainly well worth the read.” ( Shotsmag)
“Our South coast-based book group had been starved of a good book for a month or two, so it was with some excitement that we stumbled across the buzz on Twitter about Elizabeth Haynes' compelling debut novel Into the Darkest Corner. Thankfully starvation swiftly changed to gluttony when we got our hands on the book, as this is a compulsive thriller with sufficient twists and plot turns to keep the most action-avaricious of readers satisfied.” ( Bookgroup.info)

Slow don't bother

I started this book with promise.
Fed up of listening to someone's OCD.
Book going nowhere. Gave up on it

Meh

Repetitive & predictable story with no twists. Narrator made the characters sound like idiots and her accent was awful, she was trying to do a Lancashire accent but it had twangs of Scottish, Yorkshire and posh English, very annoying.

Story so-so, performance blah

What disappointed you about Into the Darkest Corner?

Performance, performance, performance!

I'm really sorry to say this, but this was the worst listen for me in like ever! It could be it's just me but the readers voice, tone, dialect just didn't fit in at all! I couldn't wait for the story to be over. And then, the story? Just too shallow. I may be spoiled with the kings like King for example but still I felt as if the story wasn't just indepth enough.

Would you recommend Into the Darkest Corner to your friends? Why or why not?

No. Mainly because of the performance.

What didn’t you like about David Thorpe and Karen Cass ’s performance?

David was fine, as he didn't have all that much (well, actually, very little) text, but Karen - I'm sorry but as I said, it could be just me but her voice, tone, dialect got on my nerves so much I couldn't wait for the story to end.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

It would be good to have excerpts of the more than just one passage of the book so that one would be able to hear more variations of the voice before buying.

Into the darkest corner

Very slow story. David Thorpe only narrates three of over 100 chapters, all in all VERY disappointing and a waste of a credit!

Meanders all over the place

What disappointed you about Into the Darkest Corner?

The story jumped backwards and forwards. Was not sure whether I was more annoyed by the pathetic heroine or the author.

What could Elizabeth Haynes have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Written in a straight line so that the reader had a chance to follow the plot. Make the heroine less " really annoying".

What character would you cut from Into the Darkest Corner?

The main characters - expected to hate him but after 5 chapters he had only been in the prologue. She I really hated very early on, her ACD was very annoying when read out. Think tap tap ad naseum.

Any additional comments?

Do not bother it does not convert well to an audio book.

Tedious

I'm 5.5 hours in to it with 8.5 hours to go, and so far nothing has happened!!! I'm so bored that I couldn't care less about what happens to the main character! I have a feeling that this book may be one of those that is better enjoyed by physically reading it, rather than listening to it.
The audio sample given sounds quite exciting, but it is from the first chapter, and I haven't heard that voice since. The rest of the book (so far) has all been from the main female protagonist, and is in a Lancashire accent. I apologise profusely at this point to anyone from Lancashire, but I am finding the accent rather grating.
So all in all, just not for me I'm afraid.

Into the Darkest Corner

Started off strong but descended into drivel.
The main character's behaviour towards the end (everything after the therapy sessions) is at times seriously questionable and at others, downright stupid.

There's a middle area between dysfunctional mental health disorders and acting like there's no danger at all. Cathy doesn't seem to be aware of this. Cathy is either completely debilitated by her crippling anxiety or she is putting herself right in the middle of dangerous situations declaring that she is not afraid , all without telling loved ones, or anyone, about very important information that threatens her wellbeing.

It was all painfully predictable but even still it might have been good if it weren't for the final third of the book throwing logic out the window.

I just didn't get it..

I was expecting great things of this book but for me it just didn't deliver, in fact I only finished the first part because I couldn't bear any more narrative around her "going out with her mates". I seemed to listen to it for hours on end and didn't even reach the point where she "plans her meticulous escape". This book needed to get a move on, it was way too slow for me...maybe if you stick with it it will improve, not my cup of tea I'm afraid.

Disappointing and frustrating

Well written on the suspense front but around such a weak plot that it was impossible to believe in the behaviour of the main character. I hung in there in case it improved but it became more and more frustrating and frankly annoying...feel like 21 hours was wasted on this.

Used to be one of my favourite books...

Until I downloaded this and it's been deftly ruined by what is single handedly the WORST voice over actress I have ever heard. Awful accent impersonation and every minor character was reduced to what I can only describe as a shoddy "posh, british man". Completely lazy choices and actually cringey to listen to. I hate to be so negative but it has actually ruined what once was a favourite read of mine, and the performances have completely put me off! Seriously, these actors need to be fired.
