Summary

How well do you know your neighbours? Would you notice if they lived or died?

Police analyst Annabel wouldn’t describe herself as lonely. Her work keeps her busy and the needs of her ageing mother and her cat are more than enough to fill her time when she’s on her own. But Annabel is shocked when she discovers her neighbour’s decomposing body in the house next door, and appalled to think that no one, including herself, noticed her absence. Back at work she sets out to investigate, despite her police officer colleagues’ lack of interest, and finds data showing that such cases are frighteningly common in her own home town. A chilling thriller and a hymn to all the lonely people, whose individual voices haunt the pages, Elizabeth Haynes’ new novel is a deeply disturbing and powerful thriller that preys on our darkest fears, showing how vulnerable we are when we live alone, and how easily ordinary lives can fall apart when no one is watching.

Critic reviews

"It's hard to put the uniqueness of Elizabeth Haynes' writing into words. Her stories grip you by the throat and force you to acknowledge that this is what real crime and real horror look and feel like, as well as real love, hope, fear. Suddenly, much of the other crime fiction you've read seems, in comparison, rather like stories made up by writers. Haynes is the most exciting thing to happen to crime fiction in a long time." (Sophie Hannah)

Human Remains by Elizabeth Haynes

Would you listen to Human Remains again? Why?

Yes. I'm sure I missed some points.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Annabelle. She had a load of courage under her socially awkward personality.

What about Karen Cass’s performance did you like?

The narration was excellent and the portrayal of the various characters sounded very authentic.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes - but I don't want to give it away.

Any additional comments?

I listen to and read a LOT of horror/thrillers, as well as watching horror/thriller movies of a range of quality, and this is by far the most disturbing book I've listened to. But it kept me captivated from start to finish. Not for the squeamish, but wow - brilliant!

Makes you think about your neighbours

It took me a third of the way into the book to put everything where it should be. It flips between characters so you will need to concentrate at first but once sorted it carry's you along desperate to make sure it is not too late

Loved the story...

Loved the story - HATED the reader! REALLY bad!
I had this on read and listen and I started reading it on my kindle - really like the story, intrigue, suspense and overall not bad at all.
BUT when I listened, I found it terrible!! The reader was just awful! Her "accents" were shocking and why she decide that all the men (with exception of Colin) were Londoners and very common, I will never know!
If I see this reader again, I will avoid!

Found it boring

It took me ages to get through this book,I just could not get interested but with other books I sometimes find that I do like it after the first few Chapters with this one I didn't get any interest until about chapter 52 but was determined to get to the end. Was relieved when I did though.

Was this a thriller??

Strange in that for the most part this well read book misleads us into thinking that it is a pleasant enough story until Colin appears with his strange lanuage, I decided several times not to continue but persevered to the end. The story is a bit unbeleivable, good reserach though. Not sure I'll read another one by Haynes.

Quite Brilliant!

What did you like most about Human Remains?

The narrative is clever, unexpected and intriguing. The characters are exceptionally well drawn. I don't like to give, or to read, spoilers. Therefore, suffice to say that Colin was quite horrible, but entirely as he should be. I loved Annabelle. I especially liked that it was mentioned that she was overweight and that, although it was hinted at that this negatively effected her self-esteem, she remained fabulous and was never described negatively. Its depressing to note that virtually all other authors (including all my favourites) use any female mentioned as overweight as a scapegoat, even if briefly! The last 'legitimate' prejudice it seems!

What about Karen Cass’s performance did you like?

I found her narration to be very good indeed. I agree with one reviewer that this book may have benefitted from a man reading the male parts, especially Colin, but Karen did a sterling job. One reviewer said her reading of Colin was unrealistic. I don't agree. He was supposed to be a narcissistic 'odd ball'. I'll resist saying any more about him, but for me, he sounded as he should.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I don't know, but I do think this story would transfer to film really well.

Any additional comments?

This is a gruesome forensic tale and not for those who's taste is for Miss Marple, but if you don't mind intelligently gruesome, I highly recommend it. This is my first book by Elizabeth Hayes, I look forward to reading her others and suspect she will become one of my favourite authors.

Gruesome!

Obviously the title should have given me a clue but the description and the sample did not prepare me for how gruesome and difficult to listen to this book was going to be. I think the voices did not help either, with all the men sounding the same as the sexual deviant sociopath that was it's main subject.
I felt tainted listening to every part where he was the subject but the story was gripping and the other characters made it good listening, so I continued to the end.
It is a good story, just not to be read when you are unable to sleep at night...it won't help your insomnia!!

Totally unbelievable story, and very disturbing!

Could not believe anything in this book as it was just so ridiculous. Extremely disturbing also and very graphic. If I could give it no stars, I would.

Dire

Boring, lacking in story and without realism. A waste of several hours you will never get back.
