Cry Wolf | [Tami Hoag]

Cry Wolf

In the rural parishes of Louisiana's French Triangle, young women are disappearing one by one, only to turn up on the banks of the bayou, strangled and cast aside where they are sure to be found. But there is one trophy the killer prizes above all others, one woman who must be silenced forever.... Attorney Laurel Chandler did not come back to Bayou Breaux to seek justice. That once-burning obsession had destroyed her credibility, her career, her marriage - and nearly her sanity. But when a ruthless predator strikes too close to home, she's lured into a perverse game from which there may be no escape.

    Story
"The weakness of the lead is astounding."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Despite the jaw dropping attitude to child abuse by the lead character I stuck with it and generally enjoyed the story. Bit too much romance for me and I would not have missed several hours being cut out.

If you’ve listened to books by Tami Hoag before, how does this one compare?

Whilst I have not checked, I would imagine this is fairly early in Ms Hoag's foray into crime. More of a romance novel with family dynamics and southern 'manners' featuring heavily. Personally I prefer the more crime based books albeit there is always some romantic elements.

Can't say I am often surprised at the outcome, but I still enjoy this type of book, not ,ucl thinking involved and great to have on whilst I do chores, cooking etc.

What about Joyce Bean’s performance did you like?

she is good with the male voices. Found it easy to distinguish between characters.

Could you see Cry Wolf being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

    sorry don't really watch TV

    Any additional comments?

I could not understand the weakness of the lead character. For someone who was seemingly a prosecuting Attourney and whose downfall was a child abuse case, she appeared to overlook events in her own life, pretending outwardly nothing happened. She was intolerant of the behaviour of a victim and appeared to have no understanding of the effect of abuse when the victim was grown.

She was pathetically needy especially for the affection of her mother, a cold hearted vacuous woman all for appearances. I don't know of the American South is really like this, other reviews suggest it is, however, if it is, I am glad I don't live there. It's all about surface appearances, more snobbish than England was 100 years ago.

having said that, I almost felt the humidity and smelt the smell described as it was very well described.

    "Not Hoag's best work"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The biggest mystery and suspense with this book was wondering when the mystery and suspense was going to start,

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It is a good story, just not was I expected from this author. More like a romance mystery...

    "Too whiney."
Would you try another book from Tami Hoag and/or Joyce Bean?

This is my 3rd book by Hoag. Really disappointed in this one. I'm in the middle of chapter 3 and I'm done.

What was most disappointing about Tami Hoag’s story?

    Characters where whiny and depressing.

    "Where's the plot?"

I didn't finish this. It was all sex; little or no story. Sex is fine but not if it is the only thing going on in a story.

    "Trite"
Would you try another book from Tami Hoag and/or Joyce Bean?

I have read this author before and was not expecting so much fluff and so little story. This book could have been easily told in a third of the book as there was so much repeat of the same old "stuff". I kept thinking I lost my place and was repeating the same chapter over and over.

Would you ever listen to anything by Tami Hoag again?

Not before reading more about the book.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator did a good job considering what she had to work with.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Can't think of any.

    Story
"Long and Drawn out for a Predictable End"

Cry Wolf was too long to be enjoyable. The ending was so drawn out and hashing out the sisters past was redundant. Jack as a love interest was hard to buy--bitter, selfish and brash don't make for a strong love interest. The narrator was decent and well at the accents, which helped get me through the book. Unfortunately the story fell short.

    "Insipid, predictable, cliché."

This book was a total waste of my time and I was unable to finish. The characters and story line were about as deep and complex as a saucer of skim milk!

The narrator did the best she could given the material with which she had to work.
