Summary

Charlie Muffin, an endearing spy, irritates his new boss and co-workers because of his appearance and age, but that doesn't stop them from taking the credit for his accomplishments. But Charlie perseveres and proves to be right over and over again in this story of the capture of a KGB general who is running a spy network in England.

Hayward Morse ably creates voices for each of the many characters, using a variety of convincing accents, though once in a while he doesn't shift to the correct voice. He is especially effective in his timing and makes the humor of certain situations evident. Through all the plot twists, there is never any hint of the surprising outcome.

Cold War skullduggery

The introduction to secret agent Charlie Muffin in which he exacts a terrible revenge further to his spymasters betrayal. A plausible plot and engaging protagonist make this an enjoyable listen

Enjoyable enough for a Plus Catalogue library book

Generally enjoyable with undertones of Len Deighton. The dialogue is a bit wooden though and the accents the narrator does are a bit flat. Listened via the Plus Catalogue so as a library book it's fine but I wouldn't pay for it.

A splended twist at the end.

It was worth waiting for the end which was unexpected. A little dry building up to the end.

Awful accents poor story.

The narrators effort to imitate the various British and foreign accents didn’t do anything to improve this listen but exactly the opposite. Poor drawn out story. I was determined to get to the end of the book but it was quite a challenge. Shan’t bother with any more. But at least it was free.

Surprisingly good!

Wasn’t expecting this to be much good for a free book but actually very entertaining. I’ll be definitely listening to the next one. Narrator very good too.

Quite short but it's OK.

nothing special. the reader does the accents like caricatures. The usual public school idiots not seeing the quality of good solid working class types etc etc etc. It works. it's OK but it isn't great by any means. Worth a listen.

very slick, well narrated story

at 5hrs a shortish story but as such it distilled down like a fine cognac.

Worthwhile Spy Drama

I first heard the Charlie Muffin stories when the first two books were turned into BBC dramas for Saturday Night Theatre. This isn't just another Le Carré, although there are elements such as reorganisation and scapegoating seen in the Smiley stories.

The obscenity of the old school tie has you rooting for the titular character from the start but, the way the book's written, you don't expect the extent of the twist at the end of the story. Only the first two books were made into audio dramas, but the style of the writing and the story means I can't wait to listen to more in the series.

The narration by Napoleon Ryan is excellent. his pronunciation and diction for the upper class bureaucracy is spot on, he speaks the German words and names properly, and he slips flawlessly between the accents and voices he's attributed to the characters. His reading keeps you enthralled, and his skillset should be used more!
