Summary

Nominated for the Audiobook Download of the Year, 2008.

You heard it here first: The unabridged edition of A Prisoner of Birth is only available as a download.

This download also includes an interview with Jeffrey Archer about A Prisoner of Birth.

Danny Cartwright and Spencer Craig were born on different sides of the track.

Danny, an East End Cockney, leaves Clement Attlee Comprehensive School at the age of 15 to take up a job at a local garage. He falls in love with Beth, the boss's daughter, and asks her to marry him.

Spencer Craig resides in the West End. A graduate of an English public school and Cambridge University, he becomes a criminal barrister and is soon tipped to be the youngest Queen's Counsel of his generation.

Danny and Beth travel up to the West End to celebrate their engagement. They end the evening in a wine bar where Spencer Craig is also celebrating - his 30th birthday, along with a select group of university chums.

Their lives will never be the same again. For, an hour later, one of them is arrested for murder, while the other ends up as the prosecution's chief witness in an Old Bailey trial.

Fantastic story telling

I've listened to lots of audio books and this is right up there with the best. Excellent story with in depth characters.

Gripping and well thought out. I Thoroughly enjoyed this book and the narrator did a great job. Another Geoffrey Archer classic.

Captivating story, from a proven storyteller

Love listening to Roger Allam, but he needs to improve his Scots dialect!!!!
The story was good, and kept me needing to know more, all the way through, from beginning to end. And then I found myself wishing for a sequel!!!!

Highly recommend this

Absolutely brilliant. Great storyline and excellent narration. This is the first book I’ve listened to fully and never been tempted to fast forward a chapter.

May be 15 years published but still relevant but also very entertaining

I had not read a Jeffrey Archer book in over a decade. I wouldn’t have described myself as a fan before but I am now! I would have been in my late teens when this came out, so perhaps that is why I missed it. However, a hit from 2008 is still incredibly relevant in 2023. If anything Archer was way ahead of his times with the themes of the privileged being able to literally away with murder (no spoilers!)… Themes are very applicable to Britain of today and the huge wealth gaps in a city like London. Yet serious points were made in an entertaining way, which I think is why this was so good. A great cast of characters and a brilliant modern epic. Was great diversion while travelling for work and Roger Allam’s superb narration transported me away from the airports, planes and trains! I listen to about one audio book per week and have been since the Pandemic - so I think I am a fairly qualified judge of narration. Allam is so good, he is equal to Stephen Fry’s beloved readings of the Harry Potter series. Highly recommend!

Brilliant Audio Book

This is the first time I have listened to or read anything by Jeffrey Archer so I wasn't sure what to expect, but this turned out to be one of the best audio books I have heard so far. Great story telling and a good narrator.
