Summary
How can a colony on Mars survive when the greatest danger on the planet is humanity itself?
All contact is lost with the first privately funded colony on Mars during a long and destructive sandstorm. Satellite imagery of the aftermath shows extensive damage to the facility. The 54 colonists who called it home are presumed dead.
Sometime later, a new mission sets down on the planet surface to investigate what remains of the derelict site, and crew biologist Dr. Jann Malbec soon discovers that the facility had developed into to a full-blown human DNA editing experiment - with unsuspecting colonists as the guinea pigs.
However, now that the truth of what was going on in the colony is revealed, powerful Earth-based corporations begin to fight for control of this extraordinary genetic research. But Dr. Malbec begins to realize that returning this technology to Earth could doom humanity to a worldwide pandemic of apocalyptic proportions. She must do everything she can to prevent that from happening - even if it means that she might never see her home planet again.

Excellent series
Well thought out hard science fiction. Within the realms of Andy weir's the Martian and artemis.

good story, builds quite well, tho some flaws
A good story but with some flaws (I can't believe the lack of safety protocols, backup systems, and poor communication systems that seem to be neccessary for the plot to work in various places). Also the narrator has rather a weird sentence delivery which becomes a little annoying.

It was ok
Whilst there was little new in the story and it didn’t have the love of characters or depth of narration of other well known Mars books it was a nice light read but don’t expect to be enthralled.

A newly found jewel
Superb take on a frequently covered theme with some unexpected twists. While set on Mars it’s more about the characters and their impact on each other than the space theme.
Very well presented and well worth the time to listen.

What a clichéd inconsistent mess this is.
Enjoyed the first few chapters discovering the main characters flaws. It then descended into a journey running down the well worn tracks of all sci-fi before it. Found the narration poor and the robot incredibly annoying. As my teachers would say must try harder

Dull, formulaic, predicable and clichéd.
Story line: Expedition team travel to Mars to investigate the fate of the first Martian colony three years after contact is lost.
On arrival the team find all the colonists dead. But evidence soon comes to light suggesting someone (or something) is still alive....
And so intrigue ensues.
But it doesn't. What follows is a tired, dull, predicable story line that's been told many times before. And many times better.
The characters are one dimensional and any attempts to flesh them out feel contrived. Russian crew members are all characters imported from the Cold War era, women are weak and men are "hard as nails".
So bad was it, I had to check it wasn't a parody title.
The narrator "croak-speaks" through much of the work (in order to effect a "rough frontier" / oil rigger setting?) stopping only to attempt "the Russian accent", male or female they both sound the same - cut & pasted straight out of a James Bond movie.
Poor effort.
Gave up. Couldn't finish it. Returning book.
