Summary

Stuart MacBride's number one best-selling crime series opens with this award-winning debut.

DS Logan McRae and the police in Aberdeen hunt a child killer who stalks the frozen streets.

Winter in Aberdeen: murder, mayhem and terrible weather...

It's DS Logan McRae's first day back on the job after a year off on the sick, and it couldn't get much worse. Three-year-old David Reid's body is discovered in a ditch: strangled, mutilated and a long time dead. And he's only the first. There's a serial killer stalking the Granite City, and the local media are baying for blood.

Soon the dead are piling up in the morgue almost as fast as the snow on the streets, and Logan knows time is running out. More children are going missing. More are going to die. And if Logan isn't careful, he could end up joining them.

Worth the time

Good story - but considering it was written in 2005 I was surprised to hear terms like "WPC" (that was dropped in 1999!) or "male nurse".. nevertheless, still going to listen to the next one.

Finally the unabridged versions!

I started this series at book 5 with the first unabridged version and have been waiting patiently for the early books to come out! Enjoyed all the books on the series and this is no exception. Thankfully book 2 has just been released so off to get that and hope the other 2 are close behind. So pleased to see the same narrator who does a great job with these.

I'm not a fan of shortened books - so will have to wait for the next 2 to continue my fix of Steele and Logan!

A rollercoaster ride!

This story is emotional to both extremes, funny in parts and overall an excellent thriller. It's made all the better by the excellent narration.

Great gritty novel

A really interesting storyline which left me guessing until the end. Lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed how the author concentrated on the story rather than the characters personal lives. The main character was very likeable but the author didn't reveal much about him. I will definitely read the next in the series. I normally listen to scandi or foreign detective novels but found the grey setting of Aberdeen worked well for this type of gritty novels atmosphere.

Engaging and suspenseful

I very much enjoyed this book. I find the narrator to be excellent and captures the characters very well. The content can be dark and saddening but that is expected from a crime novel. The story is written very well and gives a wonderful glimpse into the Scottish life and their police system. It's an empowering read.

fantastic book. great story with brilliant characters. the injection of humour in what is a morbid story made me laugh out loud. I'm eager to start the next book.
