Summary

Now a hit Netflix miniseries directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Hutton

Past the rusted gates and untrimmed hedges, Hill House broods and waits.

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own.

This classic horror novel has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror.

Would have been great if not for the reading 😔

This is such a fantastic story. I've seen the Netflix series and was utterly gripped, however had to force myself through this audiobook as the narrator's voice was really not to my liking. I wasn't able to listen to the sample before purchasing and was so frustrated listening to this.

Just as I hoped it would be!

I’ve watched the black and white film adaptation and a more recent one, so I knew where the scary bits would be, but this narrator is brilliant and her whispered ‘Elanoooooor’ gave me chills! As with every ghost story, the story is sad and really about trauma, but I still loved it as a scary book.

Timeless gothic classic.

The house is every bit as cinematic and brooding as the depiction of the Overlook Hotel.

Excellent narration

A really enjoyable listening experience, so much so I know this will be one of those audio books I will listen to again and again.
I think a special mention should be made of the narrator. Bernadette Dunne’s reading really brought Shirley’s characters to life and in my opinion was the perfect choice for this classic.

Classic, but Horror has Moved On

Excellently narrated, the prose captures not only the horrors of an iconic haunted house, but the private horrors of a person's low self-worth.

It isn't as innovative as a lot of contemporary horror, but is well worth a listen to enjoy a good-old-fashioned ghost story.

Genuinely unsettling (in a good way)

This is a short gripping novel with a sense of doom which delivers. So well written and well read. Atmospheric.
