Summary

Nominated for the Audiobook Download of the Year, 2008.

At the heart of Joseph Heller's best-selling novel, first published in 1961, is a satirical indictment of military madness and stupidity, and the desire of the ordinary man to survive it.

This is the tale of the dangerously sane Captain Yossarian, who spends his time in Italy plotting to survive. Yossarian is a bombardier in the 256th Squadron of the US Army Air Forces during World War II, stationed on Pianosa, a fictionalised island in the Mediterranean between mainland Italy and Corsica. The squadron's assignment is to bomb enemy positions in Italy and eastern France. Yossarian's mission is simply to stay alive.

Critic reviews

"The greatest satirical work in the English language since Erewhon. ( Observer)
"Wildly original, and brutally gruesome, a dazzling performance that will outrage as many readers as it delights. Vulgarly, bitterly, savagely funny, it will not be forgotten by those who can take it." ( The New York Times)
"An apocalyptic masterpiece." ( Chicago Times)

A Stunner

First and foremost is the narrator excellent. A quality production.
What is most inspiring is the serious tone of the story. The humour beautifully enrich the tale, but at the heart is it a wonderful take on the corrupted and greedy nature of humanity. Artfully written with wisdom, character and it feels as though a great deal of research was conducted by the author for authenticity purposes. So funny at times that I was in hysterics on numerous occasions.

unique and outstanding in every way

This is a book to blow you away. A one of a type novel. It is equal parts clever, funny, and quirky.
It is a book that should be on every listener's list.

A true classic.

This novel illustrates the futility of war and of it’s destructive effect on the people involved in it.
And the humour is so dark!

brilliant!

Absolutely brilliant book, and excellent emersive narration. I came in having heard much about the book but not believing it. I was wrong and this was much better than I expected.

Funny, tragic story of morality and immorality.

Fast paced and entertaining throughout. Rich characters, one of whom your sure to find in yourself (I'm definitely the anxious and indecisive Cathcart). Funny and thoughtful always but peppered with tragic and poignant moments... the description of Snowdens demise is sad and brilliant.
The narrator is great. He differentiates the characters voicing and accents just enough; no comical exaggeration, the Italian accent in particular is pleasant when it could easily have been annoying.
The ending is great. I loved the main character Yossarian, an intelligent, scrupulous, independent, fun and moral human.

Really Good

This is one of the great books of all time. It's the kind of book that really works as an audio book. This version is wonderfully read - the narrator has superb voices and accents. To audible: please do more Joseph Heller eg Good as Gold or God Knows!

Would you be willing to try another one of Trevor White’s performances?

absolutely not, awful.

Do you think Catch 22 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
