Summary
Überzeugt von der Idee, dass Indien und der ferne Osten auch über einen westlichen Seeweg zu erreichen seien, bekam Christoph Kolumbus von der spanischen Königin Isabella schließlich 3 Schiffe mit Mannschaft und Versorgungsgütern für diese Expedition. Die Santa Maria, mit 180 Tonnen Wasserverdrängung das größte dieser Schiffe, wurde somit Flaggschiff.
Am 09.10.1492 erreichte Kolumbus eine kleine Insel der Bahamas, das vermeindliche Westindien. Während er daraufhin auf den übrigen Inseln nach Gold suchte, lief die Santa Maria auf ein Riff und sank.
