Summary

Ten-year-old Jamie Matthews has just moved to the Lake District with his Dad and his teenage sister, Jasmine for a 'Fresh New Start'. Five years ago his sister's twin, Rose, was blown up by a terrorist bomb. His parents are wrecked by their grief, Jasmine turns to piercing, pink hair and stops eating. The family falls apart. But Jamie hasn't cried in all that time. To him Rose is just a distant memory. Jamie is far more interested in his cat, Roger, his birthday Spiderman T-shirt, and in keeping his new friend Sunya a secret from his dad. And in his deep longing and unshakeable belief that his Mum will come back to the family she walked out on months ago. When he sees a TV advert for a talent show, he feels certain that this will change everything and bring them all back together once and for all.

Such a beautiful book!

Loved listening to this, so beautifully narrated. A book that covers complex themes through the perspective of a 10 year old. I wish I could tell you more but would hate to ruin it for you!

A funny yet moving exprience

An emotional ride through a young boy's eyes, read with feeling. Thought provoking while combating the lump in the throat. The amusing interludes helped immensly. A great listen.

Moving and thought provoking

A very good listen. Moving and honest. It felt real and a lot was said in matters that were hinted at but not explicitly explored.

Excellent listen

Would you listen to My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece again? Why?

I would not listen again. Narration by David Tennant made me choose it. Good story, good characters. Thought the story was realistic in its treatment of the breakdown of the family. Refreshing.

Which character – as performed by David Tennant – was your favourite?

The mother, thought she was realistic.

Gently enjoyable

D. Tennant's voice always a pleasure to listen to. While not surprising, the story remains enjoyable and well written to get across the perspective of a 10 year old boy.

Humorous & heartbreaking

I listened to this book, because of good reviews & because David Tennant is the narrator. Beautifully written, with lots of humour, but also touching & through provoking parts. David Tennant does a Stirling job of bringing the characters to life. He really does the story justice.

beautifully written and heart wrenching

not ashamed to say that I blubbered like a newborn throughout this entire book. The author really captures the emotions that a child might feel when going through such confusion and turmoil. Tennant adds life and colour to the story. Definitely worth a listen!
