Summary
Mindy Kaling has found herself at a turning point. So in Why Not Me?, she shares her ongoing journey to find fulfilment and adventure in her adult life, be it falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in unlikely places, or attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behaviour modification whatsoever.
In 'How to Look Spectacular', she reveals her tongue-in-cheek solutions for guaranteed on-camera beauty. 'Player' tells the story of Mindy being seduced, then dumped, by a female friend in LA. And in 'Soup Snakes', she spills some secrets on her relationship with ex-boyfriend and close friend, B. J. Novak.
Mindy has put the anxieties, the glamour and the celebrations of her second coming-of-age into this book, to which anyone can relate. (And, if they can't, they can skip to the parts where she talks about meeting Bradley Cooper.)

Narration went through me
Couldn't finish listening to this because after about 10 minutes the narration sent me over the edge. The whine in the voice did nothing to add humour to the story. Sorry didn't enjoy it.

First book was better
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Mindy was much more earnest in her first book. This book has some good parts, where she talks about BJ and about confidence. But some parts could have been cut out (the emails of the faculty staff).
Has Why Not Me? put you off other books in this genre?
No.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The last part about not answering a young girls question about confidence correctly at a panel. I think this why Mindy is such a force and voice that should be acknowledged, listened and looked up to.
Was Why Not Me? worth the listening time?
Sure.

Well Done
a wonderful book with an insight into Mindy Kalings honesty, personality and why she struggles with people talking on her figure as a woman

The ending is worth it
I loved Mindy's first book, but this one kind of drifted in the middle and I think that's because American colleges are so different to UK universities that I got a bit lost. All the Obama section was super interesting. I'll definitely listen to Mindy's next book. I just love her frank nature.

Meh - not as funny as the sample suggests
I actually stopped listening to this as I just found it a bit dull and irritating, so only got as far as the second chapter. I'm not entirely sure whether it's the narration or the content of the book which put me off. I was expecting something light and funny, and whilst the dry mocking of shallow behaviour and quirks are amusing, the way it is read and the high-volume of sarcastic content involved somehow lost the humour for me. I usually like dry & sarcastic humour, but because the entire book is full of it without any breather, it became easy to doubt whether the content was actually being sarcastic or not... which became confusing to listen to and eventually began to just sound like someone drivelling on about something that's not actually that interesting.
As I say, I didn't get very far because it was too irritating for me. Maybe it gets better, or maybe I just don't get the humour. Either way, I enjoyed the sample, but didn't enjoy the book.
