Summary

Thirteen years ago, Moab Is My Washpot, Stephen Fry’s autobiography of his early years, was published to rave reviews and was a huge best seller. In the years since, Stephen Fry has moved into a completely new stratosphere, both as a public figure, and a private man. Now he is not just a multi-award-winning comedian and actor, but also an author, director, and presenter.

In January 2010 he was awarded the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards. Much loved by the public and his peers, Stephen Fry is one of the most influential cultural forces in the country. This dazzling memoir promises to be a courageously frank, honest and poignant read. I quite like Stephen Fry

I quite like Stephen Fry. But it turns out not quite enough to be quite interested enough in the details of his quite interesting life. He's likeable enough. But that's not quite enough. And he reads well, of course, which makes it quite goodish, but not quite goodish enough.

It is a joy to listen to Mr Fry frying

Having greatly enjoyed hours of Greek myths, wizardry, Victorian sleuthing, post modern dystopia and a variety of to-be-expected and unlikely podcasts I felt I could even dip into the personal story of Mr Fry.
Don't listen to this book
- until you have listened to 'Moab is my washpot'. That covers part 1 of The Life and it will properly stretch all your laughing and gasping muscles in readiness.
If you knew the early Sixties as a child, the Chronicles' wallow in the sea of sugar to be found flooding out of a village sweet shop should see you swallowing voluptuously.
You also have a treat in store with an insight for outsiders into life at Cambridge.
The rest is a charming tale of growing success with superb colouring-in of famous but not necessarily familiar show biz characters.
In case Mr Fry reads this, please Stephen, could you read the works of Charles Dickens for the World? It needs doing properly.

If you didn't love Stephen before . . .

What a lovely man. And here we have him chatting about his early career and he even does some affectionate impressions (his Alan Bennett is very good).

Chatting? well yes because Stephen's tone is one of a chum telling of mutual friends. He just includes you in his life, somehow.

Well described reminder of the 80s

Easygoing and mellifluous. Showbiz and tweed. Great to describe an era thus and Fry does it with aplomb.
