Summary

For the first time, comedian Jack Dee reveals the highs and lows of his early life and disastrous day jobs.

You don't just wake up jaundiced and bitter; it's taken Jack years of dedication and commitment to brew his unique cocktail of disillusionment and bile. What turned this once optimistic young man into a grumpy middle-aged git? Was it working in an artificial-leg factory? Or delivering incontinence pads for the NHS? Or was it the time when he was shunned by his peers for daring to thrash a one-armed man at tennis?

In this hilariously frank account of his life, Jack finally answers the question, 'So how did you get started in comedy then?' Along the way, he shares his blatantly unreasonable views on everything from personal trainers to boutique hotels, from the overrated moon landing to 'people who hold their cutlery the wrong way'.

Once you've listened to this book, you'll never think of Jack Dee as a smiling, happy-go-lucky, friendly face again.

Critic reviews

"Another comic with a darker edge is Jack Dee. Thanks for Nothing is the only celebrity autobiography currently worth listening to, streets ahead of the rest.

He is the perfect reader of his own self-deprecating, deadpan style but his story, of hard work and soul-searching, is gentler and less cynical than you might guess: you end up seriously liking the man."

Great listen

I saw Jack Dee very early on in his career at the comedy store and have enjoyed his performances ever since. Getting to hear about what drove him to become a comedian was a real pleasure. If you're a fan, it's a must listen.

BTW Jack, please follow it up with another. I'd love to hear about Lead Balloon and Big Brother etc. cheers.

Perfect listen

If you could sum up Thanks for Nothing in three words, what would they be?

Jack Dee's miserable

What did you like best about this story?

I find Jack's narration fantastic, it is his normal dry miserable best. Jack's Story is exactly as you would imagine it to be with him generally disliking life and everyone else in it.

What does Jack Dee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

If you read the book you would always be imagining him reading it, so why not just listen to him read it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it filled a long car journey happily.

Any additional comments?

Couldn't recommend it more.

Great Stuff

This was really interesting. Well read in his inimitable voice. Laughed out loud a lot while listening in the car. Worth buying. Glad to say it wasn't all 'Showbiz" stuff but about his life up to his first success. Hope there will be a sequel.

It was a jolly good listen wasn’t it…

I laughed, giggled and smirked, often, while listening to Jack read his autobiography. I’m a similar age and I suppose, background to Jack and have had a long career of crap and not so crap jobs. I was very entertained. Thanks Jack for making us laugh when there’s not always a lot to laugh about…. Especially at present….

Strangely disappointing

I have to say that I found this recording surprisingly disappointing. You would have thought that somebody as articulate as Jack Dee reading his own book would be extremely enjoyable, but I wish he'd got someone else to read it. He is just a bit too deadpan, which of course works wonderfully in his stand-up, but when reading his own book he just sounds bored. Maybe he was, maybe he found reading his own jokes and anecdotes into a tape recorder a bit too much of a chore, even though the book itself is great and I have looked forward to reading it since first noticing it on the bookstore shelf.
The bizarre thing about it is that I can tell from the content that if were to read the actual book it would be his voice I would be hearing in my head, with the difference that I would enjoy it a whole lot more. Does that make sense?
Sorry Jack. Perhaps you had to find time for this in the middle of a busy schedule and recorded it in a bit of a rush, or maybe having spent a long time writing and re-writing until you were happy with it you lost a bit of enthusiasm for the final product. Congratulations on writing an excellent and extremely entertaining book, but you should think about employing someone else to record the next one onto audio.

Quite entertaining

Overall quite short and covered the period leading up to Jack's break through. Would have been good to continue on and learn more about life in the public eye. I've listened to a number of comedian bios and this one is good but not among the very best. If you like Jack or you're struggling to find something else give it a go.
