Summary

A wryly funny and moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye.

Teen idol at 15, international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at 20, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences as a painfully misunderstood child actor in Ohio uprooted to the wild counterculture of mid-1970s Malibu, where he embarked on his unrelenting pursuit of a career in Hollywood.

The Outsiders placed Lowe at the birth of the modern youth movement in the entertainment industry. During his time on The West Wing, he witnessed the surreal nexus of show business and politics, both on the set and in the actual White House. And in between are deft and humorous stories of the wild excesses that marked the 80s, leading to his quest for family and sobriety.

Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last 25 years. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.

True hidden tales from a humble movie star.

Rob Lowe is a wonderful story teller and excellent with accents. He brings to our ears incredible true life stories only he has been able to experience. Great fun.

Surprisingly good. Excellent narration.

Did not expect it to be so engaging. You will be familiar with all or most of the characters. Worth a listen and well narrated by Lowe himself.

Fantastic look into another world

I did enjoy the West Wing and was to sad to see Rob Lowe's departure.

Other than that I don't know a lot about Rob, nor his films, nor did I particularly follow the media attention he once generated. So I was unsure how much of this book I'd "get". The author does a wonderful job of making his world accessible and of taking us into his experience.

One could feel it was a long list of anecdotes where he meets one famous person after another and then he's working with just about every major star of the last few decades and has met those from the decades before.

But Rob sees a path to his life, he sees the story that takes us through these anecdotes. It's a great book, I was hooked early and enjoyed it tremendously. These are good stories.

Intelligence & wit - not just a pretty face

I loved this book. I was intrigued to read it with some preconceived ideas of his career and personality. It was so much better than I expected. Lovely lyrical writing, great sense of self-deprecating humour but not displayed as false modesty. All topics covered in sufficient depth to provide context. Learned a lot. Bonus is, if you listen to him reading it on audio book he does some great impressions of the stars he provides anecdotes about. His pace, tone and timing reflect his intelligence and adds gravitas to the delivery Am tempted to read his follow book but it's not getting such good reviews.

A positive, interesting story, a good listen!

Quite enjoyed listening to this title. I've been watching Rob in some of his latest work and didn't realise his back catalogue until he spoke about them.
He's positive throughout, despite his challenges, and it's an affirming listen.

Loraine

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and like the Michael Caine biography having the author narrate their work added greatly to my enjoyment. Mr. Lowe is easy on the ear (as well as the eye)! Whilst I loved Michael Caine's chuckles in his narration Rob Lowe's impersonations of other celebrities are quite excellent - Mr. Lowe may just have missed out on selling another of his not inconsequential talents.

Highly recommended
