Critic reviews

"A lot of frolic, fun, and charming ribaldry, as well as the warm feeling of having been transported to a lovely spot where worry is unknown and anything is believable." ( The New York Times)

Disappointed when it was over

A wonderfully charming and light hearted book. Had me smiling from start to finish. I was just sad when it was over.

Utterly enjoyable

I loved this book. Its a fascinating insight into this very eccentric family and the culture of Corfu. Gerald's fascination with animals comes through very touchingly, although its rather old fashioned compared to today where interfering to the extent he did is rather frowned upon, such as seeing a nest of baby birds and just taking them. The characters they encounter in Corfu are wonderful and Nigel Davenport is a great narrator.

Wonderful story, beautifully read.

I remember loving this book when i read it as a child. And i have so enjoyed the television series. Beautifully written and beautifully read. Glorious depiction of the island of Corfu, as it was then, and the exploits of all the family.

My Family andOther Animals

Re-visited this story from my teenage years, many years on it still made me laugh and imagine the beauty of Corfu in a less commercial time.
A good, relaxing listen.

A very British comedy

I was a fan of this when it was made into a TV series in the 1980s and the book does not disappoint. Sometimes Gerald Durrell's prose is ravishingly beautiful when he described nature, but it's also a very funny book. Well read and performed, especially the different voices. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great favourite slightly marred by some odd pronunciations

This classic is well worth listening to, but I found the narrator’s characterisation sometimes jarring; and there were certain words that he pronounced most oddly - “flaksid” for flaccid and “viskera” for viscera, etc - which rather detracted from the flow of the story. But overall it was pretty well done.

As good as I remembered

It's many years since I first read this book and I enjoyed it every bit as much as I did all those years ago. It was very well read and easy to listen to and I was sad when I reached the end of the book.
