Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The original best-selling autobiography by comedian, novelist and national treasure Stephen Fry.

Few people serve time in prison before studying at Cambridge. You might be surprised to know that Stephen Fry is one of them.

Moab is My Washpot, the remarkable story of Stephen Fry's tumultuous early life, is by turns funny, shocking, tender, delicious, sad, lyrical, bruisingly frank and addictively listenable.

It's the story of a boy sent to a boarding school 200 miles from home at the age of seven, who survives beatings, misery, love, ecstasy, carnal violation, expulsion, imprisonment, criminal conviction, probation and catastrophe to emerge, at 18, ready to try and face the world in which he had always felt a stranger.

Fry writes with the wit and warmth which have become his hallmark, but with shocking candour too. For anyone seeking to understand one of Britain's greatest cultural treasures, this book is utterly essential reading.

Critic reviews

"Stephen Fry is one of the great originals. This autobiography of his first twenty years is a pleasure to read, mixing outrageous acts with sensible opinions in bewildering confusion. That so much outward charm, self-awareness and intellect should exist alongside behaviour that threatened to ruin the lives of innocent victims, noble parents and Fry himself, gives the book a tragic grandeur and lifts it to classic status." (Financial Times)

"He writes superbly about his family, about his homosexuality, about the agonies of childhood - some of his bursts of smile take the breath away - his most satisfying and appealing book so far." (Observer)

Absolutely scrubbed the grime

The title was never explained (unless I missed it), but once I found out that Moab, a mountainous land that was, which had threatened Israel, was to be so completely subdued that it became likened to a washpot or basin, it made a ton of sense that this wordsmith powerhouse was about to craft non fictitious pages of pure sandy gold dust that can sprinkle in my obedient, curious and knowledge wanting mind.

Starting with the third in the trilogy of his autobiographies (More Fool Me), I was compelled to trace back to where this Magnificence (Stephen Fry) all started.

The honesty, the openness, the hilarity and the amazement of finding out about this human, who has, in some part, helped me navigate life has well and truly fulfilled the “cleansed” title of his wonderful book.

All be it, 26 years too late, I’ve never gravitated to instant gratification, and I’m thankful for it, and even more thankful for Stephen.

I want to hug Stephen Fry

Would you consider the audio edition of Moab Is My Washpot to be better than the print version?

I enjoy audio versions, especially those read by the author as you can feel the real emotion behind the words. It's always easier to listen to someone than to read and interpret for yourself how they feel.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Moab Is My Washpot?

The intensity of feeling for 'Mateo'

Which character – as performed by Stephen Fry – was your favourite?

Stephen Fry

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, though my busy life would not allow this so it became my bedtime and overnight stay in hospital listen.

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite it being a little angry and dark in places. I have a new found love of Stephen Fry.

Essential Reading

This has to be one of the best audiobooks ever published. The autobiography details the early life of a confused, and later, delinquent young man. It is painfully honest, and read by the author, is both incredibly powerful and amusing. This should be on everyone's listening list - it's what the audiobook was invented for!

How a jailbird became a National Treasure

I have read a disgustingly filthy, sometimes proud, often conceited, over-privileged, occasionally arrogant and slightly posh-prat tell me how he eventually amended his behaviour and became an unofficial but undoubted National Treasure. It is Stephen Fry, and I heartily commend the book to anyone who admires the man and enjoys good writing. At the end I wanted to hug the guy, and urge him to hurry up and write another four or five volumes. It is his best book so far. (And I have read the others, which are all worth reading.) The title, Moab Is My Washpot, is a quotation from the Bible. As I write my own diary stuff I am aware that this wonderful book, an account of his first twenty years, can help my own attempt at honest. But the book makes me also aware that writing your own story can never be wholly honest.

Loved it

The story of Stephen Fry's early life, from childhood through to troubled teen ending just before he goes to University. Fry's reading of his own material is always entertaining, I could listen to him read the phone book. He is brutally honest about his own failings and flaws, but always the humour shines through the sadness. The story of a very naughty schoolboy. Highly recommended

Fantastically written and read

Not only does Mr.Fry have a very interesting life story, he also tells it very well. I also wish I had his linguistic capabilities.
